Boise State Tennis Team Thumps BYU 5-2

Another Mountain West Opponent, another win for Boise State. The Bronco tennis team downed the #66 BYU Cougars this afternoon 5-2 at the Appleton Center.

After playing 14 of its first 21 matches on the road, the #19 Boise State tennis team returned to the friendly Appleton Tennis Center and promptly made short work of #66 BYU 5-2 this afternoon.  It was the 12th win over a ranked opponent by Coach Greg Patton's Broncos this season.

Boise State nearly lost the doubles point, as it was decided by a tiebreaker at #1 doubles.  Clancy Shields and Stanley Sarapanich joined forces for the first time this season and downed Chip Hand and Jonathan Sanchez of BYU 8-5.  Blake Boswell and Eric Roberson fell to Cassidy Mears and Cale Planck 8-2.  That left it up to the 33rd ranked Luke Shields and Piotr Dilaj.  They fell behind 6-7 to BYU's James Ludlow and Dominic Kaufhold with the Cougars serving for the win and the doubles point.  Boise State was able to break serve, and the match eventually went to a tiebreaker with the pairs knotted at 8 games apiece.  Shields and Dilaj then took care of business in the tiebreaker 8-2 to win the point for the Broncos.

Boswell played particularly well at #4 singles, defeating Sanchez in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.  Roberson also won it straight sets and the Broncos were up 3-0.  Luke Shields followed suit with yet another straight sets victory to clinch the match and improve his singles mark to 16-3 this season.  Brother Clancy also won, but he was forced to three sets in a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 win.  Both Dilaj and Brent Werbeck lost in tiebreakers.

The Broncos will host the Boise State Red Lion Spring Break Tournament March 28-31.  This is always one of the highlights of the tennis center featuring several ranked teams in Boise.  The Broncos will take on Gonzaga Wednesday morning at 9 at the Appleton Center.
