Another Mountain West Opponent, another win for Boise State. The Bronco tennis team downed the #66 BYU Cougars this afternoon 5-2 at the Appleton Center.
playing 14 of its first 21 matches on the road, the #19 Boise State tennis team
returned to the friendly Appleton Tennis Center and promptly
made short work of #66 BYU 5-2 this afternoon.
It was the 12th win over a ranked opponent by Coach Greg Patton's
Broncos this season.
Boise State nearly lost
the doubles point, as it was decided by a tiebreaker at #1 doubles. Clancy Shields and Stanley Sarapanich joined
forces for the first time this season and downed Chip Hand and Jonathan Sanchez
of BYU 8-5. Blake Boswell and Eric
Roberson fell to Cassidy Mears and Cale Planck 8-2. That left it up to the 33rd ranked
Luke Shields and Piotr Dilaj. They fell
behind 6-7 to BYU's James Ludlow and Dominic Kaufhold with the Cougars serving
for the win and the doubles point. Boise State was able to
break serve, and the match eventually went to a tiebreaker with the pairs
knotted at 8 games apiece. Shields and
Dilaj then took care of business in the tiebreaker 8-2 to win the point for the
played particularly well at #4 singles, defeating Sanchez in straight sets,
6-2, 6-1. Roberson also won it straight
sets and the Broncos were up 3-0. Luke
Shields followed suit with yet another straight sets victory to clinch the
match and improve his singles mark to 16-3 this season. Brother Clancy also won, but he was forced to
three sets in a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 win. Both
Dilaj and Brent Werbeck lost in tiebreakers.
The Broncos will host the Boise State Red Lion Spring Break Tournament March 28-31. This is always one of the highlights of the
tennis center featuring several ranked teams in Boise.
The Broncos will take on Gonzaga Wednesday morning at 9 at the Appleton Center.
