Troy Merritt Wins Moore Golf Invitational

Boise State golfler Troy Merritt captured the first title of his career, defeating a talented field at the Ron Moore Golf Invitational in Goodyear, Arizona today. The Bronco men's team finished 9th.

Boise State's Troy Merritt won the individual title at the Ron Moore Golf Invitational today in Goodyear Arizona.  Merritt fired a 13-under par 203 to win by two strokes over Denver's Jeff Kop.  Merritt's three-round total of 203 is two strokes off the school record of 201, which Merritt set at the District VII Shoootout in October.  Boise State's Matt Hastings finished fifth, giving the Broncos their first pair of top-five finishers this year.

The Boise State team finished ninth with a 3-over par 867.  Boise State was 36 strokes behind winner Wichita State and 19 behind second-place Nebraska.  The Broncos were the only Western Athletic Conference team entered.

Merritt won for the first time in his Boise State career.  He tied at the District VII Shootout, only to lose the playoff.  Merritt shot 67 in the first round and 68 in the final two rounds in Arizona to take the title.  It marks the first time in 18 years that multiple golfers from Boise State have won individual titles in the same season.  Nick Travers won the Vandal Fall Classic in September.

Hastings finished with a 207, rebounding from a disappointing second round (71) with a three-under par 69.  It is the first top 10 finish this season for Hastings.

The rest of the Bronco team struggled throughout the tournament.  Shawn Tonkin (228, +12) finished 76th, Robbie Richards (234, +18) was 86th and Scott Loewen (239, +23) finished 97th.

Boise State will now prepare for the Belmont Invitational, April 2-3 in Nashville, Tennessee.
