Boise State Track Teams Host Idaho State

Former Big Sky Conference rival Idaho State will try to slow down the 2007 Boise State track teams in a scored dual meet in Bronco Stadium. Competition in the popular women's hammer opens the meet at 11 this morning.

The Boise State track team hosts Idaho State today in a dual scoring meet at Bronco Stadium.  This will be one of only two home meets this season and weather could not be better with a high of 80 degrees predicted.

Coach Mike Maynard's Broncos have galloped out of the gate, with six individuals ranked in the top 25 in the nation.  Eight Broncos are ranked #1 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Jarrod Stevens is fourth in the country with his hammer throw of 217 feet, three inches, the second best throw in school history.  Stevens was honored with the WAC's Male Track and Field Athlete of the Week for his effort.  Sophomore teammate Simon Wardhaugh is nipping at Steven's heels with a throw of 213-1—Wardhaugh is ranked 9th in the country.

Erik Whitsitt is ranked #6 in the country in the shot put with a 60-1 mark.  Scott Viafore tops the WAC and is #20 in the nation in the javelin with a throw of 216-9.  The 4 x 400-meter relay team also paces the league with a time of 3:13.47.

Annika Hjelm's hammer throw of 197-5 represents the WAC women's best mark and is 11th in the country.  Senior Becky Guyette ran the second fastest 10,000 meters in Bronco history last week (34:44.98) and is ranked 23rd nationally.  Guyette also leads the conference in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:29.87.

Breanna Sande also leads the WAC in the 5,000 meters, running the distance in 17:19.13.

Scoring will be as follows:  First place in each event receives five points, second place garners three points and one point will be awarded for third place.  A victory in the relay races will earn five points for the winning team with no points awarded for second.  Each school may enter a maximum of four individuals per event.

Action gets underway with Annika Hjelm and the women's hammer at 11 this morning.  Running events fire up at 2:30 this afternoon.

The track and field teams are back on the road next week at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif., on April 14 (Saturday).  The final home meet is scheduled for Saturday, April 27th when Boise State hosts the Bronco Twilight.
