Zag's Frags.. Week 11

BroncoCountry.com is proud to bring you Zag's Frags.. musings and WAC football predictions from the irrepressible, irreverent and sometimes irrational Zagco. From Honolulu to Ruston, Moscow to Las Cruces and beyond, Zagco tells you exactly what you need to know about what is happening this week in the WAC.

 A WEEKLY LOOK AT WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE FOOTBALL

 Zagco's 51-7 on the year.

This week, Zagco modified his WAC statistical rankings.  Basically, he ranked the nine WAC teams based upon how much better (percentage-wise) the best team in each category is than each team below it.  He used "1" as the base, meaning the best team in each category was rated "1."  If the best team was 30% better than another team in a category, that other team would be rated 1.300 in the category.  The lower the overall number ("Strength Index"), the better the team.

For example, Hawaii has the best total offense, with 532.8 yards of offense per game.  Hawaii is rated "1" in the total offense category.  Utah State 's offense's was the worst, with 274.7 yards of offense per game.  Thus, Hawaii 's offense gained 194.4% of Utah State 's offense.  Utah State 's offense is rated 1.940 in the total offense category.

The 9 categories are:

1.                  Total offense;

2.                  Rushing offense;

3.                  Passing offense;

4.                  Scoring offense;

5.                  Total defense;

6.                  Rushing defense;

7.                  Pass efficiency defense;

8.                  Scoring defense and

9.                  Zagco's Special Teams Index™.

Zagco also modified Zagco's Special Teams Index™ in the same basic manner.  In other words, instead of ranking the teams 1-9 in each category or using the three tiers he used last week, he gave the top team in each of the special teams categories a ranking of "1," and the rest of the teams were ranked according to how much better the top team was (percentage-wise) in the category.  Thereafter, Zagco added together each of the six special teams categories for each team and then sorted the sums in ascending order (lowest to highest).  Finally, he gave the top team a ranking of "1," and ranked each following team according to how much bigger their sum was (percentage-wise) than the top team.

The special teams categories used include the following:

1.                  Kickoff returns;

2.                  Net punting;

3.                  Punt return average;

4.                  Field goal percentage;

5.                  PAT kicking; and

6.                  Net kickoff coverage.

This week's Zagco's Special Teams Index™ is quite different than last week's rankings.  Whether or not it is better is certainly subject to debate, but Zagco offers it as another way of ranking each of the 9 WAC teams in the 6 special teams categories.

As you can see, the new special teams rankings are quite a bit different.  Fresno State is on top, which might not be hugely surprising.  Fresno leads the WAC in kickoff coverage and kickoff returns.  The Cali Bulldogs are only weak in field goal percentage, where they are 6th in the WAC.  The Vandals are close behind, which probably does surprise a lot of people.  Idaho actually leads the WAC in punt returns and PAT kicking, the latter of which is a tie at the top with Boise State .  Idaho is only real weak in kickoff returns, where it is 7th in the WAC.  Utah State has the extremely talented return man Kevin Robinson to thank for their high overall ranking.

After calculating these rankings, Zagco thinks they look pretty close to his subjective views, although he is surprised that San Jose State comes out on the bottom in the overall WAC Strength Index.  However, that's where the numbers place them.  His subjective view is that San Jose should be considered the 7th best team in the WAC, with Idaho and Utah State trailing behind.  After all, San Jose beat both of them.

Rizzo and Chaka-kan had a terrific time in Boise last week, although Chaka-kan once again ran into the Stasi-like security people, which was an ugly scene.  They ran into these two dudes from New York , who brought their kids to the game, traveling all the way from the Big Apple.  They'd become fans watching the Broncos play on television, and it was their dream to see The Blue in person and watch a game.  They were permitted to spend quite some time playing around on the field on the Friday before the game.  Nice.

There was a big breakthrough with England Dan and John Ford Coley last week too!  So far, they'd been resistant to adding a rap or hip hop song to their big comeback album.  Rizzo had been pressuring them, but everytime he offered a song, they'd reject it for weird reasons.  Then, when Rizzo was hanging out on Sixth and Main, waiting for a taxicab to pick him up after he got completely shnockered at the Reef, he heard someone playing Tupac's great song "California Love," which Rizzo has always thought was the Holy Grail of hip hop (all due respect to the Sugar Hill Gang and Tupac's other great songs, like "Changes" and "Dear Mama").  Anyhoo, Rizzo quickly penned some customized lyrics—slight modifications to make it more credible for guys like England Dan and John Ford Coley to rap—and he texted them.

They loved it!  As you read this column, they are both in the studio down at Venice Beach recording it.

Pack a vest for your Jimmy in the city of no rest
We in that potato state with a bomb butt prep beat
the state where ya never find a dance floor empty
And farmers be on a mission for them greens

I been in the game for ten years makin' rap tunes

Now it's '07 and they clock me and watch me
Diamonds shinin' lookin' like I robbed Liberace
It's all good, from Poky to tha Lake City
Your city is tha bomb if your city makin' hay

Out on bail fresh outta jail, Idaho dreamin'
Soon as I stepped on the scene, I'm hearin' hoochies screamin'
Fiendin' for money and juice
the life of a west side playa where cowards die and its all loose
Only in Idaho where we riot not rally to live and die
In Boise we wearin' Chucks not Ballies (that's right)
Dressed in Locs and khaki suits and ride is what we do
Flossin' but have caution we collide with other crews
Famous cause we program worldwide
Let'em recognize from Montpelier to Bonners Ferry
Bumpin' and grindin' like a slow jam, it's north end
So you know the row won't bow down to no man
Say what you say

New Mexico State Gaggies v. San Jose Can You See Spartans
Where:  Do You Know The Way To San Jose ?
When:  Saturday, November 10, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. MT (Altitude)

Right off the bat, Zagco would like to say that he hopes that Spartans' defensive tackle Justin Willis is recovering from his frightening injury.  For several minutes last week, Bronco Stadium stood silent and watched as he was taken off the field in an ambulance.  Early reports indicate that he was examined and released that night.  He appears to be okay, thank God.  San Jose Mercury News - SJSU defensive tackle released from hospital, 11/04/2007.

On paper, New Mexico State looks like a winner in this game.  They have statistical advantages in 6 of 9 categories.  San Jose struggles on offense, especially in scoring, where they are last in the WAC at only 16 points per game.

Yet, San Jose is playing at home.  They are a better defensive team, and Zagco was very impressed with the lockdown abilities of their corners, especially Dwight Lowery, against Boise State 's wide receivers.  The Broncos were not able to really open up their passing game against San Jose , sticking mainly to inside stuff.  Three Spartans have accounted for 8 interceptions this year—cornerback Chris Owen has 5, safety Jonathan Harris has 3, and All-American and Playboy All-American corner Dwight Lowery has 3.  Lowery suffered a right calf bruise in the game, but appears to be okay to play next week.    Thus, the strength of New Mexico State plays against the strength of San Jose Can You See.  Moreover, without running back Tony Glynn (81 carries, 487 yards, 5.6 yards per carry, and 4 touchdowns), the Gaggies rushing attack will get even worse, making them totally dependent upon Chase Hollbrook, who has thrown the second most interceptions in the WAC this year (13).  New Mexico State has the poor man's Colt Brennan (Chase Hollbrook), but it also lost its best receiver (Chris Williams) and its second leading ground gainer (Tony Glynn).  Las Cruces Sun-News - Mumme defends decision to run the ball, 11/04/2007.  The Gaggies are banged up.

Zagco believes that the Bay Area Spartans will find a way to win this game.  Dick Tomey—a totally decent guy—is a solid coach, and signal caller Adam Tafralis is a winner.  The team is reeling a bit, but they have not given up, and it is very hard to imagine them giving up under Coach Tomey.  The Gaggies look a lot like a team on the edge.  They've suffered a lot of injuries, and Zagco gets the impression that the fans are calling for Mumme's snot towel.

San Jose Can You See will defeat New Mexico State .

Hawaii enters the meat of its 2007 WAC schedule with a home game against Fresno State .  The Rainbow Warriors lead in 7 of the 9 key statistical categories.  The two categories where our island brothers trail the Cali Bulldogs are rushing offense and special teams, which is precisely where Fresno 's only hopes lie in this game.

The good news for Fresno is that it should be at full offensive strength, with both of its running backs and tight end Bear Pascoe (a freakin' COOL name) ready to play on the Rock.  FresnoBee.com: Fresno State Bulldogs: Running back Miller looks like he's a go, 11/6/2007.

Meanwhile, Hawaii has lost its top running back, Kealoha Pilares (294 yards and a 5.9 yards per carry average).  The Rainbow Warriors will also be without defensive end Francis Maka (17 tackles and 1 sack).  UH's RB Pilares, DE Maka sidelined - The Honolulu Advertiser, 11/7/2007.  Zagco, however, believes that the longer Colt Brennan gets away from his injuries, the better he going to be.  Hawaii 's fleet of running backs, all of whom are healthy, frighten and confuse Zagco.

This game is Fresno sole remaining chance at proving itself to be a true upper echelon WAC team.  Zagco will credit them with defeating Nevada in Reno , but they must win this game in order to move out of purgatory.

Hawaii will be challenged by Fresno 's running attack.  Bronco fans like to tease Hawaii about defense, but we must remember that Hawaii is second in total defense in the WAC, and it has the top rushing defense.  Let's look at some common opponents:

·         Against New Mexico State , Hawaii gave up 442 yards, 77 of which were rushing yards.  Boise State gave up 89 total yards, -19 of which were rushing yards!

·         Against San Jose Can You See, Hawaii gave up 302 yards, 42 of which were rushing yards.  Boise State gave up 150 total yards, 50 of which were rushing yards.

·         Against La Tech, Hawaii gave up 410 yards, 223 of which were rushing yards.  Boise State gave up 463 yards, 208 of which were rushing yards.

So, yes, Boise State comes out on top, by a significant margin, in the head-to-head matchups.  Fresno 's defensive numbers are heavily boosted by its home games against two I-AA teams.  Against Northern Colorado, Hawaii gave up only 182 total yards, 50 of which were rushing yards.  Against Charleston Southern, Hawaii gave up 311 yards, 72 of which were rushing.  Zagco believes Hawaii 's defense is good, but he believes they are not as good as their current numbers show, in relation to Boise State and a couple other WAC teams.  He also believes, from watching them, that Hawaii's defense loses a lot of "pop" as a game evolves—they come out on fire, but they seem to wear themselves out a bit.

Zagco thinks Fresno is going to give Hawaii a good game.  He could see Fresno winning, but he thinks Fresno 's lack of a passing offense will hurt.  Fresno could control the clock, and it could hurt Hawaii with its tremendous return man, A.J. Jefferson, who averages 36.1 yards per kickoff return.  In the end, however, Fresno is just not a come-from-behind team, and Hawaii 's offense at home will break Fresno 's will.

Hawaii will defeat Fresno State .

Louisiana Tech v. Louisiana State Tigers
Where:
When:  Saturday, November 10, 2007, at 6:00 p.m. MT

Zagco has grown to respect La Tech under Coach Dooley, but the Southern Bulldogs still have a ridiculous schedule.  This week, as a reward for going on the road two weeks in a row and winning conference games against Utah State and Idaho, they get to go back home to Louisiana and travel again to play their big brothers from the SEC.  Gee, thanks!  Zagco remains convinced that La Tech's athletic director (who presumably sets the schedule) is totally insane.  Clearly, he needs to spend some time studying the scheduling tao of Boise State 's athletic director, Gene Bleymeier.

Zagco's not going to analyze this game.  As much as he respects what Coach Dooley is doing, this is a loser.

LSU will defeat La Tech.

Boise State comes into Logan riding high off its impressive back-to-back conference wins against Fresno and San Jose Can You See, having apparently put its defensive issues behind and having its offense reach a level of potent consistency.  Yes, there were some early struggles last week against San Jose , beginning with Titus Young's fumble into the end zone on the opening drive and continuing into the second quarter, but things started clicking thereafter.  About the only real blemish to an otherwise fine performance by the Broncos was a rather odd inability to consistently open holes for our running backs.  After the game, Coach Pete suggested that we were failing to properly block the middle linebacker.  Whatever it was, it was disappointing.  Thankfully, the inside and underneath passing game seemed to be working very, very well, and the Broncos really had very little trouble defeating an overmatched Bay Area Spartans squad.

Zagco's main concerns about Boise State in last week's game include the following:

1.                  The crazy running punt;

2.                  The run blocking issue discussed above.  Zagco thought Ian Johnson looked tentative, too, but that could be attributable to his injury and recovery and to the blocking issues.  It could also be attributable to him being married to a fetching lady who is shoveling lots of Greek food down his throat, and as Rocky's trainer Mickey said, "women weaken legs."  Zagco will await the game this week before forming any solid opinions about Ian or the running game.;

3.                  Penalites ( Boise State had 10 penalties for 86 yards; San Jose had 0 penalties); and

4.                  Drops by the wide receivers (a couple passes, one fumble, and another near fumble caused by the ground).

The penalties issue has been bugging Zagco off and on all season.  We've got some problems with penalties.  It seems like it's lots of holding, some false starts, and some other lapses in judgment.  Right now, Boise State leads the entire WAC with 71 penalties.  We're losing almost 70 yards per game because of penalties.  It's just inexcusable coming from a team that prides itself on execution and discipline.

Utah State is a really crappy team, but they have an awesome player.  Last week, Kevin Robinson had 259 all-purpose yards, breaking Utah State 's record (previously held by Emmett White) for all-purpose yardage.  Mr. Robinson now has 6,058 career all-purpose yards.  Robinson's Record-Setting Day Not Enough As Aggies Fall To Fresno State, 38-27 :: Senior Breaks USU's Career All-Purpose List.  He averages 210.7 all-purpose yards per game.  The amazing Robinson's numbers on the year include:

1.                  14 rushing attempts for 52 yards;

2.                  44 receptions for 522 yards and 4 touchdowns;

3.                  17 punt returns for 322 yards (19.5 ave.) and 1 touchdown;

4.                  34 kickoff returns for 1,000 yards (29.4 ave.) and 2 touchdowns.

Sadly, however, the Aggies lack in so many other areas.  They have no running back in the WAC's top ten.  Kevin Robinson is 10th in receiving in the WAC.  Quarterback Leon Jackson (the WAC's best punter with a 42.4 average), is rated 7th in the WAC in passing efficiency.  He's only thrown 4 picks, but he is being forced to play within a conservative system (which is the best thing, frankly).  The Aggies simply do not have the horses to keep up with Boise State , although with the number of points the Broncos are likely to put on the board, it could be interesting seeing Mr. Robinson's talents on display.

Boise State 's biggest enemy this week could be complacency.  It's a no-brainer game, really, so the team needs to keep itself motivated.  If they have any hope at all of going bowling somewhere else, they not only need to win out, but they also need to put some style points on the board for the myopic east coast voters, who put two three loss teams, Connecticut and Michigan in front of us.  Unreal.

Boise State will defeat Utah State .

9.                 \r\nZagco's Special Teams Index™.\r\n\r\n \r\n

\r\n

Zagco\r\nalso modified Zagco's Special Teams Index™ in the same basic manner. \r\nIn other words, instead of ranking the teams 1-9 in each category or\r\nusing the three tiers he used last week, he gave the top team in each of the\r\nspecial teams categories a ranking of \"1,\" and the rest of the teams were\r\nranked according to how much better the top team was (percentage-wise) in the\r\ncategory.  Thereafter, Zagco added\r\ntogether each of the six special teams categories for each team and then sorted\r\nthe sums in ascending order (lowest to highest). \r\nFinally, he gave the top team a ranking of \"1,\" and ranked each\r\nfollowing team according to how much bigger their sum was (percentage-wise) than\r\nthe top team.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

The\r\nspecial teams categories used include the following:\r\n\r\n

\r\n

1.                 \r\nKickoff returns;\r\n\r\n

\r\n

2.                 \r\nNet punting;\r\n\r\n

\r\n

3.                 \r\nPunt return average;\r\n\r\n

\r\n

4.                 \r\nField goal percentage;\r\n\r\n

\r\n

5.                 \r\nPAT kicking; and\r\n\r\n

\r\n

6.                 \r\nNet kickoff coverage.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

This\r\nweek's Zagco's Special Teams Index™ is quite different than last week's\r\nrankings.  Whether or not it is\r\nbetter is certainly subject to debate, but Zagco offers it as another way of\r\nranking each of the 9 WAC teams in the 6 special teams categories.\r\n\r\n \r\n

As\r\nyou can see, the new special teams rankings are quite a bit different. \r\n\r\n\r\nFresno\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n is on top, which might not be hugely surprising. \r\n\r\n\r\nFresno\r\n\r\n leads the WAC in kickoff coverage and kickoff returns. \r\nThe Cali Bulldogs are only weak in field goal percentage, where they are\r\n6th in the WAC.  The\r\nVandals are close behind, which probably does surprise a lot of people. \r\n\r\nIdaho\r\n actually leads the WAC in punt returns and PAT kicking, the latter of which is\r\na tie at the top with \r\n\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n.  \r\n\r\nIdaho\r\n\r\n is only real weak in kickoff returns, where it is 7th in the WAC. \r\n\r\n\r\nUtah\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n has the extremely talented return man Kevin Robinson to thank for their high\r\noverall ranking.  \r\n\r\n

\r\n

After\r\ncalculating these rankings, Zagco thinks they look pretty close to his\r\nsubjective views, although he is surprised that \r\n\r\nSan Jose\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n comes out on the bottom in the overall WAC Strength Index. \r\nHowever, that's where the numbers place them. \r\nHis subjective view is that \r\nSan Jose\r\n should be considered the 7th best team in the WAC, with \r\nIdaho\r\n and \r\n\r\nUtah\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n trailing behind.  After all, \r\n\r\nSan Jose\r\n\r\n beat both of them.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

Rizzo\r\nand Chaka-kan had a terrific time in \r\n\r\nBoise\r\n\r\n last week, although Chaka-kan once again ran into the Stasi-like security\r\npeople, which was an ugly scene.  They\r\nran into these two dudes from \r\n\r\nNew York\r\n\r\n, who brought their kids to the game, traveling all the way from the Big Apple. \r\nThey'd become fans watching the Broncos play on television, and it was\r\ntheir dream to see The Blue in person and watch a game. \r\nThey were permitted to spend quite some time playing around on the field\r\non the Friday before the game.  Nice.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

There\r\nwas a big breakthrough with England Dan and John Ford Coley last week too! \r\nSo far, they'd been resistant to adding a rap or hip hop song to their\r\nbig comeback album.  Rizzo had been\r\npressuring them, but everytime he offered a song, they'd reject it for weird\r\nreasons.  Then, when Rizzo was\r\nhanging out on Sixth and Main, waiting for a taxicab to pick him up after he got\r\ncompletely shnockered at the Reef, he heard someone playing Tupac's great song\r\n\"California Love,\" which Rizzo has always thought was the Holy Grail of hip\r\nhop (all due respect to the Sugar Hill Gang and Tupac's other great songs,\r\nlike \"Changes\" and \"Dear Mama\").  Anyhoo,\r\nRizzo quickly penned some customized lyrics—slight modifications to make it\r\nmore credible for guys like England Dan and John Ford Coley to rap—and he\r\ntexted them.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

They\r\nloved it!  As you read this column,\r\nthey are both in the studio down at \r\n\r\nVenice\r\n \r\nBeach\r\n\r\n recording it.\r\n\r\n

Right\r\noff the bat, Zagco would like to say that he hopes that Spartans' defensive\r\ntackle Justin Willis is recovering from his frightening injury. \r\nFor several minutes last week, Bronco Stadium stood silent and watched as\r\nhe was taken off the field in an ambulance. \r\nEarly reports indicate that he was examined and released that night. \r\nHe appears to be okay, thank God.  San\r\nJose Mercury News - SJSU defensive tackle released from hospital, 11/04/2007.\r\n\r\n

On\r\npaper, \r\n\r\nNew Mexico\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n looks like a winner in this game.  They\r\nhave statistical advantages in 6 of 9 categories. \r\n\r\n\r\nSan Jose\r\n\r\n struggles on offense, especially in scoring, where they are last in the WAC at\r\nonly 16 points per game.  \r\n\r\n

\r\n

Yet,\r\n\r\n\r\nSan Jose\r\n\r\n is playing at home.  They are a\r\nbetter defensive team, and Zagco was very impressed with the lockdown abilities\r\nof their corners, especially Dwight Lowery, against \r\n\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n's wide receivers.  The Broncos\r\nwere not able to really open up their passing game against \r\n\r\nSan Jose\r\n\r\n, sticking mainly to inside stuff.  Three\r\nSpartans have accounted for 8 interceptions this year—cornerback Chris Owen\r\nhas 5, safety Jonathan Harris has 3, and All-American and Playboy All-American\r\ncorner Dwight Lowery has 3.  Lowery\r\nsuffered a right calf bruise in the game, but appears to be okay to play next\r\nweek.    Thus, the strength\r\nof \r\n\r\nNew Mexico\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n plays against the strength of San Jose Can You See. \r\nMoreover, without running back Tony Glynn (81 carries, 487 yards, 5.6\r\nyards per carry, and 4 touchdowns), the Gaggies rushing attack will get even\r\nworse, making them totally dependent upon Chase Hollbrook, who has thrown the\r\nsecond most interceptions in the WAC this year (13). \r\n\r\n\r\nNew Mexico\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n has the poor man's Colt Brennan (Chase Hollbrook), but it also lost its best\r\nreceiver (Chris Williams) and its second leading ground gainer (Tony Glynn). \r\nLas Cruces Sun-News\r\n- Mumme defends decision to run the ball, 11/04/2007. \r\nThe Gaggies are banged up.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

Zagco\r\nbelieves that the Bay Area Spartans will find a way to win this game. \r\nDick Tomey—a totally decent guy—is a solid coach, and signal caller\r\nAdam Tafralis is a winner.  The team\r\nis reeling a bit, but they have not given up, and it is very hard to imagine\r\nthem giving up under Coach Tomey.  The\r\nGaggies look a lot like a team on the edge. \r\nThey've suffered a lot of injuries, and Zagco gets the impression that\r\nthe fans are calling for Mumme's snot towel.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

San\r\nJose Can You See will defeat \r\n\r\nNew Mexico\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n.\r\n\r\n

\r\nHawaii\r\n enters the meat of its 2007 WAC schedule with a home game against \r\n\r\nFresno\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n.  The Rainbow Warriors lead in 7 of\r\nthe 9 key statistical categories.  The\r\ntwo categories where our island brothers trail the Cali Bulldogs are rushing\r\noffense and special teams, which is precisely where \r\n\r\nFresno\r\n\r\n's only hopes lie in this game.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

The\r\ngood news for \r\n\r\nFresno\r\n\r\n is that it should be at full offensive strength, with both of its running backs\r\nand tight end Bear Pascoe (a freakin' COOL name) ready to play on the Rock. \r\nFresnoBee.com:\r\nFresno State Bulldogs: Running back Miller looks like he's a go, 11/6/2007.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

Meanwhile,\r\n\r\n\r\nHawaii\r\n\r\n has lost its top running back, Kealoha Pilares (294 yards and a 5.9 yards per\r\ncarry average).  The Rainbow Warriors\r\nwill also be without defensive end Francis Maka (17 tackles and 1 sack). \r\nUH's\r\nRB Pilares, DE Maka sidelined - The Honolulu Advertiser, 11/7/2007. \r\nZagco, however, believes that the longer Colt Brennan gets away from his\r\ninjuries, the better he going to be.  \r\n\r\nHawaii\r\n\r\n's fleet of running backs, all of whom are healthy, frighten and confuse Zagco.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

This\r\ngame is \r\n\r\nFresno\r\n\r\n sole remaining chance at proving itself to be a true upper echelon WAC team. \r\nZagco will credit them with defeating \r\nNevada\r\n in \r\n\r\nReno\r\n\r\n, but they must win this game in order to move out of purgatory.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\r\nHawaii\r\n will be challenged by \r\n\r\nFresno\r\n\r\n's running attack.  Bronco fans\r\nlike to tease \r\nHawaii\r\n about defense, but we must remember that \r\n\r\nHawaii\r\n\r\n is second in total defense in the WAC, and it has the top rushing defense. \r\nLet's look at some common opponents:\r\n\r\n

\r\n

·        \r\nAgainst \r\n\r\nNew Mexico State\r\n, \r\nHawaii\r\n\r\n gave up 442 yards, 77 of which were rushing yards. \r\n\r\n\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n gave up 89 total yards, -19 of which were rushing yards!\r\n\r\n

\r\n

·        \r\nAgainst San Jose Can You See, \r\n\r\nHawaii\r\n\r\n gave up 302 yards, 42 of which were rushing yards. \r\n\r\n\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n gave up 150 total yards, 50 of which were rushing yards.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

·        \r\nAgainst La Tech, \r\n\r\nHawaii\r\n\r\n gave up 410 yards, 223 of which were rushing yards. \r\n\r\n\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n gave up 463 yards, 208 of which were rushing yards.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

So,\r\nyes, \r\n\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n comes out on top, by a significant margin, in the head-to-head matchups. \r\n\r\n\r\nFresno\r\n\r\n's defensive numbers are heavily boosted by its home games against two I-AA\r\nteams.  Against Northern Colorado, \r\n\r\nHawaii\r\n\r\n gave up only 182 total yards, 50 of which were rushing yards. \r\nAgainst \r\nCharleston\r\n Southern, \r\n\r\nHawaii\r\n\r\n gave up 311 yards, 72 of which were rushing. \r\nZagco believes \r\nHawaii\r\n's defense is good, but he believes they are not as good as their current\r\nnumbers show, in relation to \r\n\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n and a couple other WAC teams.  He\r\nalso believes, from watching them, that Hawaii's defense loses a lot of\r\n\"pop\" as a game evolves—they come out on fire, but they seem to wear\r\nthemselves out a bit.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

Zagco\r\nthinks \r\nFresno\r\n is going to give \r\n\r\nHawaii\r\n\r\n a good game.  He could see \r\nFresno\r\n winning, but he thinks \r\n\r\nFresno\r\n\r\n's lack of a passing offense will hurt.  \r\nFresno\r\n could control the clock, and it could hurt \r\n\r\nHawaii\r\n\r\n with its tremendous return man, A.J. Jefferson, who averages 36.1 yards per\r\nkickoff return.  In the end, however,\r\n\r\nFresno\r\n is just not a come-from-behind team, and \r\nHawaii\r\n's offense at home will break \r\n\r\nFresno\r\n\r\n's will.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\r\nHawaii\r\n will defeat \r\n\r\nFresno\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n.\r\n\r\n

Zagco\r\nhas grown to respect La Tech under Coach Dooley, but the Southern Bulldogs still\r\nhave a ridiculous schedule.  This\r\nweek, as a reward for going on the road two weeks in a row and winning\r\nconference games against Utah State and Idaho, they get to go back home to\r\nLouisiana and travel again to play their big brothers from the SEC. \r\nGee, thanks!  Zagco remains\r\nconvinced that La Tech's athletic director (who presumably sets the schedule)\r\nis totally insane.  Clearly, he needs\r\nto spend some time studying the scheduling tao of \r\n\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n's athletic director, Gene Bleymeier.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

Zagco's\r\nnot going to analyze this game.  As\r\nmuch as he respects what Coach Dooley is doing, this is a loser.\r\n\r\n

\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n comes into \r\nLogan\r\n riding high off its impressive back-to-back conference wins against \r\n\r\nFresno\r\n\r\n and San Jose Can You See, having apparently put its defensive issues behind and\r\nhaving its offense reach a level of potent consistency. \r\nYes, there were some early struggles last week against \r\n\r\nSan Jose\r\n\r\n, beginning with Titus Young's fumble into the end zone on the opening drive\r\nand continuing into the second quarter, but things started clicking thereafter. \r\nAbout the only real blemish to an otherwise fine performance by the\r\nBroncos was a rather odd inability to consistently open holes for our running\r\nbacks.  After the game, Coach Pete\r\nsuggested that we were failing to properly block the middle linebacker. \r\nWhatever it was, it was disappointing. \r\nThankfully, the inside and underneath passing game seemed to be working\r\nvery, very well, and the Broncos really had very little trouble defeating an\r\novermatched Bay Area Spartans squad.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\r\nZagco's main concerns about \r\n\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n in last week's game include the following:\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

1.                 \r\nThe crazy running punt;\r\n\r\n

\r\n

2.                 \r\nThe run blocking issue discussed\r\nabove.  Zagco thought Ian Johnson\r\nlooked tentative, too, but that could be attributable to his injury and recovery\r\nand to the blocking issues.  It could\r\nalso be attributable to him being married to a fetching lady who is shoveling\r\nlots of Greek food down his throat, and as Rocky's trainer Mickey said,\r\n\"women weaken legs.\"  Zagco will\r\nawait the game this week before forming any solid opinions about Ian or the\r\nrunning game.;\r\n\r\n

\r\n

3.                 \r\nPenalites (\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n had 10 penalties for 86 yards; \r\n\r\nSan Jose\r\n\r\n had 0 penalties); and\r\n\r\n

\r\n

4.                 \r\nDrops by the wide receivers (a\r\ncouple passes, one fumble, and another near fumble caused by the ground).\r\n\r\n \r\n

\r\n

The\r\npenalties issue has been bugging Zagco off and on all season. \r\nWe've got some problems with penalties. \r\nIt seems like it's lots of holding, some false starts, and some other\r\nlapses in judgment.  Right now, \r\n\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n leads the entire WAC with 71 penalties.  We're\r\nlosing almost 70 yards per game because of penalties. \r\nIt's just inexcusable coming from a team that prides itself on\r\nexecution and discipline.\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\r\n\r\nUtah\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n is a really crappy team, but they have an\r\nawesome player.  Last week, Kevin\r\nRobinson had 259 all-purpose yards, breaking \r\n\r\nUtah\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n's record (previously held by Emmett White) for all-purpose yardage. \r\nMr. Robinson now has 6,058 career all-purpose yards. \r\nRobinson's\r\nRecord-Setting Day Not Enough As Aggies Fall To Fresno State, 38-27 :: Senior\r\nBreaks USU's Career All-Purpose List.  He\r\naverages 210.7 all-purpose yards per game.  The\r\namazing Robinson's numbers on the year include:\r\n\r\n

\r\n

1.                 \r\n14 rushing attempts for 52 yards;\r\n\r\n

\r\n

2.                 \r\n44 receptions for 522 yards and 4\r\ntouchdowns;\r\n\r\n

\r\n

3.                 \r\n17 punt returns for 322 yards\r\n(19.5 ave.) and 1 touchdown;\r\n\r\n

\r\n

4.                 \r\n34 kickoff returns for 1,000 yards\r\n(29.4 ave.) and 2 touchdowns.\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

Sadly,\r\nhowever, the Aggies lack in so many other areas. \r\nThey have no running back in the WAC's top ten. \r\nKevin Robinson is 10th in receiving in the WAC. \r\nQuarterback Leon Jackson (the WAC's best punter with a 42.4 average),\r\nis rated 7th in the WAC in passing efficiency. \r\nHe's only thrown 4 picks, but he is being forced to play within a\r\nconservative system (which is the best thing, frankly). \r\nThe Aggies simply do not have the horses to keep up with \r\n\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n, although with the number of points the Broncos are likely to put on the board,\r\nit could be interesting seeing Mr. Robinson's talents on display.\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\r\n\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n's biggest enemy this week could be\r\ncomplacency.  It's a no-brainer\r\ngame, really, so the team needs to keep itself motivated. \r\nIf they have any hope at all of going bowling somewhere else, they not\r\nonly need to win out, but they also need to put some style points on the board\r\nfor the myopic east coast voters, who put two three loss teams, Connecticut and\r\nMichigan in front of us.  Unreal. \r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\r\nBoise\r\n \r\nState\r\n will defeat \r\n\r\nUtah\r\n \r\nState\r\n\r\n.\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
