Free-Throw Shooting Keys 65-60 Win Over Idaho

It was almost disaster for the Boise State women's basketball team. The Broncos overcame poor shooting to outlast Idaho 65-60 for their seventh straight win.

The Lady Bronco basketball team avoided a huge upset last night by gutting out a 65-60 win over 2-18 Idaho in Moscow.  Guards Jessica Thompson and Tasha Harris hit 17 of 19 free throws in the second half and combined for 33 points to lead Boise State to its seventh consecutive victory.  The defending Western Athletic Conference champions are in second place with a 7-2 league mark, ½ game behind Fresno State (7-1).  Idaho slips to 1-7 in conference action.

Boise State had to battle a dismal shooting performance and a fired up Idaho squad for the win.  The two teams combined for just seven field goals in the first 13 minutes of the game, five by Idaho and only two for Boise State.  The Broncos were down 16-11 with 4:28 remaining in the half when Coach Gordy Presnell's team rallied to tie the game at 24 going into the locker room.

Neither team led by more than four points in the second half until Thompson's free throw in the final seconds gave Boise State the final margin of victory.  The Broncos shot just 29.8 percent from the field (17-57) but won the game from the free-throw line by hitting 27-34 (79.4%).

Thompson finished with 18 points while Harris contributed 15 points and six steals.  Jackie Lee led the Bronco effort on the boards with nine rebounds to go with seven points while freshman Sierra Moeller had seven points, six rebounds and a career-high three blocked shots.

Katie Madison led Idaho with 22 points and 10 rebounds, Alana Curtis chipped in 13 points and Carli Bakondy added 10.  Yinka Olorunnife led all players with 14 rebounds.

Boise State improved to 15-6 on the season and hosts five of their last seven games.  The Broncos host Louisiana Tech next Thursday and New Mexico State on Saturday.
