Broncos Take Solid Commissioner's Cup Lead

Boise State used three WAC titles this winter to shoot past Hawai'i in the Commissioner's Cup Standings. The Broncos, behind by 6.25 points, used titles in men's and women's basketball and gymnastics to take a commanding 9.5-point lead over UH. Nevada's strong spring sports teams will force the Broncos to continue their red-hot success down the stretch.

The most incredible winter sports season in Boise State history was capped by the Bronco gymnasts winning the Western Athletic Conference title last night in Taco Bell Arena.  The Lady Broncos picked up six points in the WAC Commissioner's Cup competition to take a commanding lead of 9.5 points.  The league awards a trophy each year to the school with the most overall sports success, as determined by a system that awards points in 19 conference sports.

Boise State finished the winter by winning conference championships in four of the seven sports contested.  The Broncos dominated the Pac-10 wrestling championships and both the men's and women's basketball teams shared regular season WAC titles.  The Boise State men's indoor track team also finished second in the WAC.  It is by far the best performance ever by the Bronco winter teams.

Boise State had accumulated just 26.75 points in five fall sports and just two in swimming.  They equaled that total of 28.75 with their performance in outdoor track, basketball and gymnastics, coming from 6.25 points behind Hawai'i after the swimming championships to a 9.5 point lead over the Rainbows.  Utah State is third with 47.75 points, followed by Nevada with 44.25, Fresno State with 39.25, Idaho with 37.25, New Mexico State (35.25), San Jose State (33.75) and Louisiana Tech with 24.

Hawai'i used WAC titles in soccer, volleyball and football to capture the lead, which they held until the recent Bronco storm.  Boise State finished second in football and third in men's cross country last fall and added a second place finish in men's indoor track

Fresno State fields teams in all eight of the spring sports, while Hawai'i and Nevada have seven.  Boise State and Utah State feature teams in six of the remaining eight sports.

Last year, Nevada scored 42.25 points in the spring sports to wrest the Commissioner's Cup trophy away from Boise State, which won it in 2005-2006.  The Broncos scored 32 in its six sports down the stretch.  Fresno State scored 41.5 last year to 33.5 for Hawai'i.  Given the strong spring last year for the Wolf Pack, the Broncos will still need to improve to capture the Cup.  Nevada already is in first place in softball and second in baseball.  They also feature strong golf teams.

Once again, it appears that the Broncos and Pack will battle for the trophy but Hawai'i could make it interesting and Fresno State still has a chance if Boise State does not perform well in the conference championships.  The Broncos must finish first or second in both men's and women's tennis and men's track to bring home the Cup.  They will also need strong finishes in women's track and both men's and women's golf.  Obviously, finishing ahead of Nevada in golf or women's track would be huge.
