San Ramon Valley HS QB Joe Southwick (Danville, CA) became the first 2009 Boise State commitment back on May 27th. "The visit was awesome," he said. "I'd certainly give it a ten."

Joe made the trip to Boise on Saturday due to being in action on Friday night. "We got there at about one o'clock on Saturday," he said. "Mr. (Aristotle) Thompson took us to the student union and we had lunch."

Southwick and the coaches really made a connection in the recruiting process. That helped Joe know that was making the right decision. "It was my third time in Boise," he said. "It was great to meet the coaches again. They are the greatest guys."

Joe is thrilled to be able to play for Chris Petersen. "Coach Pete is the man. I'm going to love playing for him," he said. "I'm going to do everything I can to make him successful. He's a guy that you can connect with and talk to."

The facility improvements at Boise State really influenced Southwick. "We got to tour the sky boxes," he said. "They were amazing. It was very luxurious." Big facility improvements always seem to have a positive effect on recruiting. The new indoor practice facility was also on display. "I love the IPF," he said. "It's awesome. It's beautiful. It's a really nice complex," he added.

The Boise State coaches certainly picked the perfect home game to put their football program on display. It was Homecoming against a good opponent that had recently gone on the road and defeated Pitt. "The atmosphere was awesome," he said. "It was my first game in Boise. I've been going to Cal games and the stadium was just as loud as Cal. I love the fans and how enthusiastic they are," Southwick added.

Southwick's parents enjoyed the trip as much as he did. "My parents loved it as well," he said. "They loved the way they were treated. They are serious about football and it's a family atmosphere at the same time."

Joe and his teammates completed their first game of the season last Friday. They played West HS from Tracy, CA. "We won 35-10," he said. "I was 20-28 for 288 yards and 3 TDs," he added. Five of those incompletions were due to dropped passes. It was an efficient beginning to the season to say the least. "We play San Leandro this week," he said. "It's the game of the week in the Bay Area and a non-conference game." San Ramon Valley defeated San Leandro by a fifty point margin last season. "I think we'll get after them and score a lot of points," he said. "We just need to be able to contain their speed."
