Can Boise State Join Eight Elite Schools?

Boise State won for the eighth time this season with a 49-0 win over New Mexico State Saturday. They have accomplished that feat every year this decade and if they can do it one more time, the Broncos will become the ninth school in college football history to win eight or more games in every year of a decade.

Boise State is in position to accomplish a feat of amazing historic significance.

Only eleven times in the history of college football has a team won eight or more games each year of a decade.  With one more season of eight wins, Boise State can become the 12th.  Oklahoma, Georgia, LSU, Texas and Virginia Tech are also in line to achieve eight wins each year of this decade.

The eight elite schools to accomplish this remarkable feat are Nebraska in the 70's, 80's and 90's, Michigan in the 70's and 90's, Pennsylvania and Princeton in the 1890's, BYU in the 1980's, and Florida, Florida State and Tennessee in the 90's.

Boise State finished the year 2000 with a 10-2 record, defeating UTEP in the Humanitarian Bowl and ended 2001 with an 8-4 mark.  They were 12-1 in 2002 (again winning the Humanitarian Bowl over Iowa State), 13-1 in 2003, defeating TCU in the Fort Worth Bowl and 11-1 in 2004.  The Broncos finished 9-4 in 2005, 13-0 in 2006 and 10-3 last season.  Boise State's record of nine eight-win seasons in a decade has only been matched 25 times since college football began.

This feat that the Broncos are chasing has not been accomplished by USC, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State or Notre Dame.  As mentioned above, Texas, Oklahoma and Georgia all have a chance this decade.

The following is a list of all the teams in the history of college football that have matched or exceeded Boise State's run of consecutive eight-win seasons.  Schools that have been successful this decade are also shown.
