Davis' Dream Season Ends

Nearly all season long, Tesoro HS LB John Michael Davis (Las Flores, CA) battled through injuries that would have kept most players on the sidelines, but a magical playoff run for the Titans was cut short with a heartbreaking loss to Long Beach Poly. Davis spoke to BroncoCountry.com about his senior season and his future as a Bronco.

Tesoro HS LB John Michael Davis (Las Flores, CA) and his teammates saw their run toward a state championship end last Saturday in a heartbreaking 20-17 loss to Long Beach Poly. "It was a tough loss," he said.

Overall, the season was a huge success for a team that began the season ranked #10 in Orange County (by LA Times) and found themselves at #1 by the end of the regular season. "It was great to end my high school career with a good season," he said.

The Titans continued to prove the doubters wrong throughout the season as Tesoro finished with a 13-1 record. They outscored their opponents by a total of 541-193. "I thought we'd be good," he said. "We just got better as the season went on."

There were some impressive wins along the way. One of those being a thrilling 38-35 win against Matt Barkley (USC commit) and Mater Dei. "It was cool to beat Mater Dei," he said. "We picked him (Barkley) off four times. Two of them went for six." The Titans breathed a sigh of relief when Mater Dei missed a FG to end the game. "I was so relieved when they missed the FG."

The most satisfying win for Davis came the following week against Orange Lutheran. "Beating Orange Lutheran in the semi-finals was probably my favorite win," he said. "I think they underestimated us a bit." The Titans jumped out to a huge lead and never looked back as they won 42-14.

Davis (6'1, 221, 4.5) showed his versatility throughout the season as he played three different positions on defense. "I played linebacker, safety, and nose tackle," he said. He also accomplished this while nursing an injury that occurred early in the season. "I dislocated my elbow," he said. "I'm pretty close to being 100%."

Playing nose tackle against Long Beach Poly was quite an experience for John Michael. "It's like chaos to be down there against those offensive linemen," he said. "You just put your head down and go. I did get a sack so that was cool," he added.

Davis is now looking forward to his future at Boise State. "I'm real excited to get up there to Boise," he said. "I can't wait." John Michael and his family will be in attendance at the Poinsettia Bowl. "We got tickets to the game," he said. "TCU will be a great game," Davis added.

Two Boise State coaches have visited John Michael in the past couple weeks. "Coach Tuivai came by last week," he said. "Coach Yates came by the week before." Chris Petersen will have his in-home visit with John Michael in January.

Davis is already looking forward to playing on the Bronco defense. "I'm excited," he said. "All of the players are fast and intense. They have a lot of energy," he added.

John Michael was a leader for the Tesoro defense this season. He had 49 tackles, 7 sacks, and 2 INTs. "I thought I was the big play player," he said. "Just make the big plays when they needed it. Bring intensity."
