Gerke Set To Begin Bronco Career

Bishop Kelly HS OL Spencer Gerke (Boise, ID) signed with Boise State in the 2007 recruiting class. He gray-shirted and will join the team for spring practice this year. He spoke to BroncoCountry.com about his current status, now 12 months removed from active football practice, and his plans for his future as a Bronco.

Bishop Kelly HS OL Spencer Gerke (Boise, ID) signed with Boise State in the 2007 recruiting class. He gray-shirted and will join the team for spring practice. "I'm excited about playing football again," he said. "It was tough to sit back and watch my buddies participate."

Gerke (6'3) was about 240 pounds when he originally signed with Boise State. Since, he has added some weight to his frame. "I'm at about 290lbs right now," he said.

Spencer was originally recruited by Coach (Scott) Huff. "Coach Huff recruited me," he said. "He can relate to the players. He's young and he's just a great guy. He can connect with us," he added.

What has Gerke been up to since signing his LOI? "I've been running and lifting," he said. "I have a bit of a schedule that I go off of. I've been hanging out with the other guys that red-shirted."

The 2008 Broncos impressed Gerke. "They had a great season," he said. "A lot of guys stepped up. I thought the OL did great as well," he added.

Spencer moved to Boise from Southern California about eight years ago and he has been a Bronco fan ever since that day. "I grew up watching them," he said. "A lot of guys from my high school went there."

The Bronco coaches really like Gerke's toughness. "The coaches felt I had the frame to play OL," he said. "I play to the whistle and get stuff done."

The loss to TCU is added motivation for Spencer. "I got fired up for next season after the TCU game," he said. "No one likes to lose. I'm looking forward to getting out there and competing."

Gerke gives Boise State some much needed depth on the OL. OL is always one of the most valuable positions to any team and you can never have too much depth at that position, especially if it's talented and hungry depth... and Spencer Gerke's hunger has been growing for over a year now.

Welcome to the Bronco's Spencer.
