The Boise State softball team didn't have to wait long to pick up its historic first victory. The Lady Broncos downed previous undefeated Fordham 8-4 today in the Cathedral City Kickoff to record the first softball win in school history. Fordham had beaten #12 Fresno State of the Western Athletic Conference 5-2 just hours before.
Fordham's Samantha Pellechio delivered an RBI single to take an early lead, but Boise State responded in the bottom of the second to tie the contest. The Broncos loaded the bases with two outs when freshman Megan Suitos dropped a blooper down the left field like. The Rams got a solo homer from Jocelyn Dearborn to go up 2-1 in the third, but that lead was erased by Boise State in the fourth. Freshman Allie Crump singled to left, setting up junior Kathy Cox, who belted a home run that gave the Broncos a 3-2 lead.
Fordham tied it back up in the seesaw battle with a run in the top half of the fifth when Boise State believed that was enough. Freshman Christina Capobianco doubled off the wall in center to put the Broncos out in front for good. Boise State then loaded the bases for freshman Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo who lofted a two-run RBI single into shallow right for a 6-3 Bronco lead.
Freshman pitcher Aubray Zell (1-1) did not allow another run in earning the complete game victory. Zell struck out six and allowed just three earned runs. "Aubray dominated for us tonight. Her pitches were moving and she was hitting her spot," said Thorpe. "We couldn't have asked for anything more from her today."
Capobianco picked up another RBI as the Broncos scored two more insurance runs in the sixth to notch the landmark win.
"The girls knew what they were capable of and today they truly believed it, which led to us going out and getting the win," said head coach Erin Thorpe
Boise State will meet Wisconsin tomorrow in their final game of the Kickoff at 10 a.m. Mountain time. Today's game against No. 17 Cal was cancelled due to the weather and poor field conditions.
