A Day To Remember

San Ramon Valley HS QB Joe Southwick (Danville, CA) became the first Bronco commit for the 2009 recruiting class in May of 2008. There was no recruiting drama for Southwick as he was firm from the day he committed to the Broncos. He spoke to BroncoCountry.com about his Signing Day experience and his future as a Bronco.

San Ramon Valley HS QB Joe Southwick (Danville, CA) became the first Bronco commit for the 2009 recruiting class in May of 2008. He has been a firm commitment since the day he chose Boise State. "It was pretty relieving," he said. "It was a longtime coming since I've been committed for so long," he added.

Southwick (6'2, 185) signed and faxed his LOI early Wednesday morning. "I signed and had the fax sent in by 7:00 am," he said. "It was just me and my family at my house."

Joe was visited numerous times by the Bronco coaches leading up to Signing Day. "Coach Harsin and Coach Strausser came to my basketball game," he said. "Coach Pete also came to one of my games."

There are a few weeks of basketball left and Southwick will focus on his future at Boise State immediately following the season. "I'm almost done," he said. "Two weeks left and after that it's all about getting ready. I'm in the best shape I've been in for a while, running wise. I feel good about my condition right now."

Southwick picked up another honor in January as he was named the GoldenStatePreps.com First Team All-State QB and the NorCal Offensive Player of the Year. "That's a big honor for me," he said. "A lot of hard work paid off. The big picture shows that our team was successful and our defense kept giving us the ball back."

One aspect of Southwick's game that has been overlooked a bit is his ability to run and scramble out of the pocket. "I always felt I had the running ability my junior year," he said. "Coach wanted me to stay in the pocket and hit my WRs since our OL was so good. I think it adds a new dimension."

A couple games stood out over Joe's HS career. "Our junior year against Cardinal Newman in the Oakland Coliseum," he said. "We were down 14-0 at half and came back and won. Senior year against Monte Vista and beating them twice was great too. There's a lot of history between us."

A competitor is the best way to describe Joe Southwick. "I'm a really competitive person," he said. "I want to win. That's why I made my choice for Boise State. I want to go to some outstanding Bowl Games," he added.

BroncoCountry.com will continue to have updates on Joe Southwick as he prepares for his arrival in Boise.
