Boise State Gymnasts Set New Vault Mark

The Boise State gymnastics team closed out their regular season with a dominating performance in beating Southern Utah last night in Taco Bell Arena. The Lady Broncos set a new school vault record en route to a 196.225-195.225 victory in their final preparation for the WAC Championships next week.

The 23rd-ranked Boise State gymnastics team set a school record on vault and recorded the ninth best score in Bronco history in a dazzling performance on Senior Night, defeating #31 Southern Utah 196.225-195.225 last night in Taco Bell Arena.

The show couldn't have been more pleasing to the four Bronco seniors in their home finale:  Courtney Achter, Shaniece Craft, Amber Neroes and Ashli Rainboth.  They had set goals of conference champions, being ranked in the Top 25 and being national contenders when they arrived on campus four years ago.  The first two have been achieved with only the third in question.

The Boise State team will begin their quest for that so-far elusive third goal next week in the Western Athletic Conference Championship at Sacramento next week.  Then, it's off to the NCAA Regionals and a chance to accomplish what no other Bronco team has ever done--get to Nationals as one of the top 12 teams in the country.

"Our seniors set a new standard for Boise State gymnastics when they got here four years ago," said co-head coach Tina Bird.  "Each one of them has contributed in so many ways to this team and they can all leave knowing they have had amazing accomplishments. We are really going to miss them."

Boise State set the tone for the evening in their first rotation with an incredible performance on vault.  When they were done, the Lady Broncos had registered a 49.325 to set the school record.  With the Senior Night crowd solidly behind them, they proceeded to post their third-best score of the season on bars (48.850), their second-best mark on beam (48.875) and tied their second-best performance in floor exercises (48.175).

As a result, the Broncos' Regional Qualifying Score shot up by .405 to 195.215, which could land them in the Top 20 nationally.

Hannah Redmon notched her ninth career win on vault with a career-best 9.95, tied for fourth best all-time at Boise State.  Redmon now ranks fifth in career vault wins.  Freshman Chelsee Apple tied her career best with a 9.90.  Craft tied for fifth place with a solid 9.875, while Neroes finished with a 9.825 and junior Ruthie Pennington scored a 9.775.

"Our vault squad just keeps getting better and better," Bird observed. "We keep stepping it up each and every meet."

Redmon also posted her first career win on bars with a 9.850.  Junior Taylor Jacob was second with a 9.825, sophomore Mallory Dziawura contributed a 9.775, Neroes scored a 9.725, redshirt sophomore Katie Tuller posted a 9.675 and Rainboth finished with a score of 9.575.

Southern Utah's Elise Wheeler took the individual title on beam with a 9.875, helping her win the all-around with a 39.525.  Dziawura hit a career-best of 9.825 on the apparatus to pace the Broncos.  Freshman Lindsay Kazandjian also finished with a 9.825, sophomore Kelsey Lang scored a 9.750, Neroes recorded a 9.675 and freshman Cristy Dahlquist was right behind with a career-high 9.650.

The Broncos sensed they were on fire and finished the evening with a dynamite floor show.  Redmon won her third event of the night with her eighth career victory on floor (9.925).  Redmon his now in sixth place in career floor wins.  Kazandjian earned a career-high mark of 9.580 to tie her with Lang.  Junior Yvette Leizorek was great as well with a 9.850 with freshman Fiona Leslie and sophomore Sarah Smith notching scores of 9.750 each.

"It was a near-perfect night for our senior night," exclaimed Bird.

The WAC Championships are slated for next Saturday as the Broncos attempt to defend their WAC title against strong challenges from Southern Utah and San Jose State along with host Sacramento State, Utah State and Cal State Fullerton.
