Lady Broncos Reach 4th Straight WAC Final

The Boise State women's tennis team can't seem to get to the next level like their male counterparts. They get another shot at #16 Fresno State when the two rivals meet in Honolulu for the 2009 WAC Championship.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.  Nope, that's not it.

"The third time's the charm!"   Oops, that's wrong also.

None of the traditional rallying cries apply as Boise State will try for the fourth time to beat Fresno State in the Western Athletic Conference women's tennis championship in Honolulu tomorrow.  The Broncos smothered Nevada 4-0 in a match much closer than the final count to advance to the title game.

Coach Mark Tichenor's Broncos kicked off the match by capturing the doubles point when Laura Baum and Bianca Jochimsen downed Lais Ogata and Florence De Vrye of Nevada 8-3 and Vivien Silfany & Klaudia Wlodarczyk beat Aodhnait Lombard & Caroline Stevens 8-5.

Baum followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory, her five Bronco teammates all won their first set and Boise State seemed totally in control.  But Pichittra Thongdach, the #80 player in the nation, lost her second set to Nevada's Carolina Baily 6-2.  Then Lauren Megale, Boise State's #2 singles player, lost her second set as well 6-3.  Then Jochimsen lost her second set to Stevens 6-2 and Nevada was making their move.

But Silfany came through with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Maria Mizyuk and Megale prevailed over De Vrye 6-4, 3-6, 61 and the Broncos advanced.

The Lady Broncos have adopted new rallying cries to pump them up for the WAC Championship match, which gets underway at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Mountain time).

"If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again!"

"The fourth time's the charm!"
