Thomee Takes Second in Javelin

Boise State sophomore Pontus Thomee had been improving each week this season. This afternoon, Thomee finished second in the javelin at the NCAA Western Regional in Eugene.

Boise State sophomore Pontus Thomee topped favored throwers from USC, California, Washington and host Oregon to finish second in the javelin at the 2009 NCAA West Regional Track and Field Championships this afternoon in Eugene.

Thomee was seeded sixth in the event with a throw of 70.34 meters but beat that by over two meters (72.93) to surprise veteran spear throwers such as Corey White of USC, Ryan Young of California and Alex Wolff of Oregon.  #1 seed Cyrus Hostetler of Oregon won the event with a throw of 73.06 meters.

Seniors Eric Demers and Scott Viafore were also entered for Boise State, but neither scored points.  16th (60.69) while Viafore was 21st with a toss of 59.25.  Both Broncos finished their careers this afternoon.

Boise State is currently in third place in the standings with those eight points earned by Thomee.  That won't stand, but the Broncos are favored to get ninth place.  Action continues in Eugene through tomorrow.
