Kyle Wilson Is The Male Athlete Of The Year

Kyle Wilson increasingly ran away with the title of Bronco Male Athlete of the Year in voting by BroncoCountry posters. Wilson led the way in initial balloting and then produced a landslide victory over All-Americans Ryan Grinnell and Andrew Hochstrasser in the final.

Junior Kyle Wilson is BroncoCountry's choice for the 2008-09 Bronco Male Athlete of the Year in balloting just concluded on the Blue Turf Board. It is the fourth and final annual award to be decided as Wilson joins Boise State head football coach Chris Petersen (Coach of the Year), the Bronco Pac-10 Champion wrestling squad (Team of the Year) and triple jump National Champion Eleni Kafourou (Female Athlete of the Year)as honorees for this past year.

Wilson collected 50 percent of the vote in the final to win the annual BroncoCountry award. All-American senior Ryan Grinnell of the track team attracted 27 percent to 23 percent for wrestling All-American Andrew Hochstrasser.

Wilson garnered 28 percent of the tally in the initial poll to 20 percent for Grinnell, 17 percent for both Hochstrasser and Ian Johnson, 12 percent for tennis star Clancy Shields, five percent for wrestling All-American Tyler Sherfy and no votes for track All-American Simon Wardhaugh.

Wilson led the WAC in interceptions with five and was ranked 10th nationally as he helped the Broncos become the only team in America with three undefeated regular seasons in five years. Wilson finished the year with 28 tackles and a team-leading 10 pass breakups. Wilson was named All-WAC at safety and received second team honors as a punt returner with 470 yards and three touchdowns. He was far and away the top WAC punt returner in the national standings, ranking 12th in the country with a 14.24 average and was one of only two players in the nation to bring three punts back for touchdowns. Wilson was named 2nd-Team All-American as a punt returner by The Sporting News.
