What Boise State Can Achieve In 2009

If Boise State is fortunate enough to continue their winning ways this season, it could be another historic year for Bronco fans.

Boise State is in the final stages of preparation for this fall's college football season.  The 2009 Bronco football team can make history in many ways.

This fall, Boise State can become:

ü      the second team since 1920 to have four undefeated, untied regular seasons in a six-year period (the other is Nebraska.) and the fourth school in college football history to do so (Yale and Washington are the others.)

ü      the third team in college football history to reach a winning seasons percentage of 85.7% (the others are Michigan and Ohio State .)

ü      the fifth team in the modern era and eighth in history to win ten or more games in eight years of a decade.

ü      the sixth team in college football history to win seven consecutive games in eight consecutive seasons.

ü      the 10th team since 1920 to win nine or more games in eight consecutive seasons.

ü      the 10th team since 1920 and the 14th in history to win nine or more games in nine years of a decade.

ü      the 11th team in history to pass 42% in percentage of seasons ranked in the Top 15 (passing Penn State ).

ü      the 12th team in history to win eight or more games in each year of a decade.

ü      the 13th team since 1920 to win eight or more games in 11 consecutive seasons.

ü      the 16th school in history to win seven or more games in each year of a decade.

ü      the 22nd team since 1920 to win seven or more games in 11 consecutive seasons.

ü      the 32nd team since 1920 to achieve back-to-back undefeated regular seasons, the eighth team since 1975 and the fifth school since 1975 and the 22nd school since 1920.

By averaging 33.08 points a game this season the Broncos can break their school record for scoring average over a 10-year period.  Boise State is second in NCAA history to Yale (1883-1892), which averaged 46.6 points a game.  Boise State averaged 40.5 points per game from 1999-2008.    Boise State needs to average 55.1 points a game over the next three years to set an NCAA record for ten-year scoring.

Most of these hurdles set in front of them will be difficult to achieve, but it is a good bet that the '09 Broncos will follow tradition in rewriting the record book.
