Boise State In WAC Volleyball Tourney Semi's

Boise State advanced to the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference volleyball tournament with a convincing 3-1 victory over #3 seed Idaho last night in Las Vegas .  The Broncos will be challenged by #2 seed New Mexico State tonight.

The Broncos pulled ahead in the final points of the first set to capture a 1-0 lead with a 25-22 advantage.  Boise State fell behind by as many as eight points in the second set but fought back valiantly to tie the match at 24.  Then, the upstart Broncos scored the final two points to take the set 26-24. 

The third set was close throughout with Idaho staving off elimination in a 25-23 set.  Boise State moved on to their first-ever WAC semi-final with a 25-21 win in the fourth set.

"This was a big win for Boise State volleyball," said head coach Shawn Garus. "Yes, it's a big win over our rivals, but an even bigger step for our program to advance in the tournament."

Alisha Young (16), Sadie Maughan and Amanda Remy (13 each) and Elizabeth Griffin (10) all had double digit kills.  Remy added 11 digs in being one of only two players on either team with a double-double.  Jeanene Rose led the Broncos with 22 while Kersti Whitney added 15. Young and Maughan each had four blocks to lead Boise State 's attack at the net.   Breann Nesselhuf was a huge force for the Broncos with 49 assists, eight kills and seven digs.

Idaho was led by Sarah Conwell who had 19 kills and 16 digs. Meredith Rice contributed a game-high of 37 digs while Anna McKinney and Kelsey Taylor each had five blocks.

Boise State will meet New Mexico State tonight at 6 p.m. Mountain time.  In the other match last night, #5 Fresno State upended #4 Nevada and will face #1 seed Hawai'i tonight following the Bronco-Aggie match.
