Lady Broncos Off To Best Start In 24 Years

The Boise State women's basketball team cruised by UNLV 74-66 in the opening round of the Lady Rebel Round-Up Tournament last night in Las Vegas. The Broncos will challenge Washington State this afternoon in the tournament final.

The Boise State women's basketball team apparently doesn't know you're not supposed to beat the host team of a tournament.

The Lady Broncos used a 17-2 run to gain control and then defeat host UNLV 74-66 in the opening game of the Lady Rebel Round-Up Tournament in Las Vegas last night.

The Broncos closed out the first half on a 10-2 spurt and then scored the first seven points of the second half to gain the upper hand.

Jessica Van Hoogen scored a season-high 26 points to lead the Broncos.  She scored 16 points in the first half, including the first 11 for Boise State .  Coach Gordy Presnell's team is off to its best start in 24 years at 6-0, tying the 1985-1986 team.

Boise State shot out to an 18-9 lead with under six minutes remaining in the first half but the Rebels rallied with a 10-2 run to close to 20-19.  The Broncos responded and headed into the locker room with a 30-21 halftime advantage.

Tasha Harris poured in seven points to open the second half and the Lady Broncos were never headed after that.

Boise State shot 43.3% (26-60) from the floor compared to 33.9% for UNLV.  The Broncos were outrebounded last night 45-37, but were able to force 21 Rebel turnovers.

Harris added 13 points and five boards for Boise State , while Janie Bos had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists and Rebecca Kepilino had eight points and six rebounds.

Erica Helms paced the Lady Rebels with 18 points while Markiell Styles had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
