West Salem HS QB Brett Smith (Salem, OR) is expected to be one of the top prospects in the State of Oregon for the 2011 recruiting class. The standout QB is still looking for his first offer and two programs in particular are showing the most interest. "Washington and Boise State are showing the most interest right now," he said.

Offensive Coordinator Bryan Harsin recruited 2010 signee Grant Hedrick and it appears he's mining the Beaver State for yet another QB. "Coach Harsin is recruiting me," Smith said. "He's real easy to have a conversation with. We haven't gotten too deep in the process yet, but I like his approach to the game," he added.

The Northwest flavor of Boise State is one aspect that Smith really likes. "They are a BCS team," he said. "They flew under the radar the last couple years and have a lot of local guys from the Northwest. To see how much they've grown speaks volumes about their coaching staff. That's attractive to me."

To play for a championship program is the dream of many prospective recruits. Brett hopes to play for a championship contender on the next level. "It's my dream to play college football," he stated. "I want to be in a place where we can win championships. I want coaches that I'm comfortable with and a great group of guys. I'm also looking for a good environment."

Smith and Grant Hedrick competed with each other at the Matt James Camp in Portland, OR. They also happen to be friends. "He's a buddy of mine. I've known Grant for a while," he said. "He has really made a name for himself. We went to the same camp every weekend with Matt James. I knew it was only a matter of time before he got an offer."

Last season, West Salem put together a solid 2009 campaign as they finished with a 10-2 record. Brett hopes he and his teammates can take it a step further in 2010 and bring home a state championship. "We exceeded expectations a bit last year," he said. "Now I'm just hoping for the best my senior year. We have a lot of starters returning. I think we'll be pretty good," Smith added.

Leadership is perhaps the best quality that a QB can bring to the field. "I think I bring leadership," he said. "I really take pride in the way I play and I try to rally the guys around me. I play with passion and enthusiasm."

The summer camp circuit is only a few months away and Smith is already planning on making a stop in Boise. "I'm going to the Boise State Camp in June," he said. "I spoke to Coach Harsin about it and I'm really excited. I'm also going to the Nike Camp in Corvallis and the Elite 11 Camp."
