Fresno State Eliminates Broncos 6-5

Chalk this one up to experience. Three Boise State errors in the top half of the seventh inning allowed Fresno State two runs that would prove costly in a 6-5 defeat in the WAC Tournament in Las Cruces, New Mexico last night.

For the second consecutive day, the upstart

Boise

State

 softball team battled #2-seed

Fresno

State

down to the wire at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in

Las Cruces
,
New Mexico

.

And for the second time, the Broncos lost a heartbreaker to perennial WAC power

Fresno

State

by one run (6-5) in the last inning.

Fresno

State

, which scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat

Boise

State

last night, stayed one step ahead of Coach Erin Thorpe's team the entire game.

With one run in the first and second innings, the Bulldogs grabbed the early lead.

Boise

State

fought back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Holly Bourke got things going with a walk and then reached second on a groundout by Kelly Sweeney.  Maghan Yurek laid down a beautiful bunt to advance Bourke to third and dependable Tazz Weatherly easily got her home with a single to left.  After Weatherly swiped second, Kellie Caplan rocketed a triple to tie the game at two.

Fresno

State

, which has qualified for the NCAA Tournament every year since it began, kept the pressure on the young Broncos with two more runs in the top of the sixth.  Nicole Angene doubled and centerfielder Diane Runge singled to start the inning and two runs came home on an error and a sacrifice fly.

Vanessa Alvarez singled to start the Bronco sixth and Christina Capobianco responded with a double in the gap to close the margin to 4-3.

The Bronco defense was their undoing.  Three errors in the top half of the seventh allowed

Fresno

State

to take a 6-3 lead.  Jessi Hanna singled and steady Kathy Cox launched a two-run homer to bring in two runs for

Boise

State

.

But that was as far as the rally would go.  Morgan Melloh closed the door by retiring three in a row to eliminate the Lady Broncos from the tournament.

Nevertheless,

Boise

State

finished third, just as they had done in the regular season in only their second year of existence.  Kudos to them!

Fresno

State

 will take on

Hawai'i

this afternoon in the WAC Championship and the right to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA's.
