Broncos Fare Well At WAC Track Championships

Although it is too early to say they are contending for a title, the Boise State men and women's track teams both did well today in Ruston, Louisiana at the WAC Championships. The Bronco men lead with 75 points while the women are fourth with 30 points.

Boise State found the heat and humidity of Ruston, Louisiana to their liking in the third day of the Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships.

Buoyed by teammate Kurt Felix's decathlon win, the fired-up Bronco squad came up with some surprises in opening up a lead in the men's competition and making some noise on the women's side.

The Boise State men lead heavily-favored Utah State 75-60. Idaho is in third with 34 points, followed by Fresno State with 30 and Louisiana Tech with 18. Boise State's point total is 11 points over projection although the Broncos are not near as strong in the running events. Utah State, meanwhile, is 15 points under where they should be at this point in the competition.

While the meet is still USU's to lose, the results today mean that if Boise State can score an upset or two early on Saturday, it could be interesting. Still, Utah State is projected to score 192 points to 148 for Boise State. Tech is projected to finish third with 115 points to 103 for Idaho and 99 for Fresno State in a tightly-bunched group.

The Idaho women are having a great meet, 23 points ahead of schedule and with 83 points entering the final day of competition. They have now moved up enough to sufficiently challenge perennial champion Louisiana Tech. Tech and Utah State have 38 points each to 30 for fourth-place Boise State, 26 for New Mexico State, while Nevada has 25, Hawai'i a disappointing 18 and Fresno State 15.

Hawai'i, which was Boise State's closest challenger to fourth place coming in, is a full 18 points below schedule and is now projected to finish seventh. Fresno State will battle the Broncos with a projected 88 points to 95 for Boise State. The Lady Broncos could possibly finish as high as third with an outstanding performance Saturday. Utah State is 15 points under right now and is projected to finish with 100 points.

The Aggies were hurt badly in the shot put, where they were projected to score nine points and earned just three. The 10,000-meter run helped the Bronco women even though they didn't score. Idaho (20 points) took points away from Utah State (3) and Hawai'i (10) to help the Bronco cause.

Chase Sexton, the #8 seed in the discus, topped his career high by eight feet (168-6) to place second to Louisiana Tech strongman Larry Jones (181-11). Utah State, projected to score six in the event, scored just one. The Broncos, projected to score eight points in the hammer, tallied 10 when sophomores Alex Nelson (192-10) and Trevor Kraychir (191-01) took third and fourth place. The pair outclassed senior Beau Whitney of Idaho, the #2 seed.

Coach J.W. Hardy's team loaded up on the long jump, swept the top three places and finished fifth as well, scoring 26 points in that event alone. Zacharias Arnos, who has already qualified for nationals in the event, led the way with a leap of 25-feet, 2.50 inches. With the win, Arnos swept both the indoor and outdoor long jump titles.

Sophomore Eetu Viitala took second with a personal best of 24-8.50 and Felix added to his point total with an outdoor best jump of 23-6.25. Freshman Rolando Trammel earned two points for the Broncos with a jump of 23-2.75, also an outdoor best for Trammel. Eric Capelle (22-4.50) just missed scoring, landing in seventh by just ¾ of an inch.

Felix also finished second to Utah State's Clint Silcock in the high jump. Silcock cleared 7-feet .50 inches but had to fend off Felix (6-11.50), who cleared an outdoor best. Felix now has 24 points individually to lead all WAC student-athletes.

Boise State also scored heavily in the steeplechase, with junior Kevin Higgs finishing second (9:12.81) and sophomore Sawyer Bosch (9:18.87) taking fourth. Higgs' time beat his career best by five seconds. The Bronco team suffered a blow, however, when freshman Zach Wiles (9:48.10) finished out of the running.

Senior superstar Eleni Kafourou won her 11th WAC title, although her long jump win was quite a bit closer than anticipated. Kafourou soared 20-feet, 5-inches in her next-to-last jump to earn the gold over a valiant Chelsea Hayes of Louisiana Tech, who finished just two inches behind. Tech scored nicely in the event with Quatisha Williams (20-2.25) third and Tiana Davis (19-8.25) fourth for 19 team points. Bronco freshman Racquel Jones was eighth (18-11.25).

Junior BreAnna Craig posted a 12-5.50 pole vault to take third with teammate Annelise Bertleson sixth (11-11.75). Heidi Doring's vault of 11-feet .75 inches gave her seventh place and Boise State 11 team points in the event. Junior Sasa Kampic gave a good toss of the spear to finish fourth in the javelin (144-1).

Preliminary heats got underway today as well. Boise State exceeded expectations in the women's hurdles with three Broncos advancing to the finals in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Mariani Maldonado smashed her career high of 13.73 in leading the Bronco short hurdlers. Maldonado is now in the all-time top three at Boise State with the performance. Megan Olivetti ran a 13.76 while freshman Monisha Davis finished in 13.96.

Maldonado also clocked a personal best of 1:02.05 in the 400-hurdles with Emily Funkhouser (1:02.94) and Joi Glass (1:03.06) also qualifying.

Jones just barely qualified in the 100-meters with a career best of 11.88, just 5/100th's of a second from #3 all-time at Boise State.

Capelle's time of 21.97 in the 200 qualified him for tomorrow's final. Michael Walrath (1:52.66) and Dusty Klein (1:53.67) qualified for tomorrow's finals in the 800.

Six events will be run as finals by time on Saturday, including the 1500-meter runs for the men and women, the men's 400-meters, men's 400-meter hurdles, men's 110-meter hurdles and the women's 400-meters. Tomorrow's events begin at 11:30 a.m. Mountain Time with the men's pole vault and the women's hammer throw. Running events begin at 4 p.m. in Ruston.

As usual, keep tuned to BroncoCountry for up-to-the-minute results.
