The Boston College Eagles travel to Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium on Saturday to take on the Louisville Cardinals. Both teams have have struggled to win games this season. The Cardinals are currently 2-4 and are coming off a 41-21 loss to Florida State. The Eagles are 3-4 and have yet to notch an ACC win.
Boston College’s offensive woes continued last week as they lost to Clemson 34-17. Head coach Steve Adazzio chose freshmen Jeff Smith to get the start last week and he struggled. Smith threw for 87 yards and ran for only 13. As a quarterback who makes his living rushing the ball this is not good enough to compete in the ACC. He ran for one touchdown and threw for another but, overall still isn't near where Coach Adazzio needs him to be. After the loss against Clemson last week, Coach Adazzio was asked about Smith’s confidence increasing Adazzio said "I think it's not a big galloping stride, but incrementally, I think yes. I certainly felt that way. He's going to get better each week. You want to see that happen and it's going to happen because he's a gifted athlete and he cares. He works really hard at it.” The Eagles offense struggled all night against Clemson’s defense. Boston college moved the ball for a total of 246 yards last week and struggled in every offensive category.
As for the Cardinals, Louisville has some offensive threats such as freshmen quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jackson threw for three touchdowns and 300 yards last week against Florida State and is very effective when he runs the ball. The cardinals offense hasn't completely found their footing yet but, they look better and better each week. The passing game against Florida State was a very good step in the right direction for this offense. If they can get running back Brandon Radcliff moving, this team can be a duel threat and cause problems for the Eagles defense. The Cardinals offense has to put the Eagles defense under pressure for a chance to win. The Eagle’s defense is currently ranked number one in the country but, their secondary definitely can be vulnerable at times. Look for Lamar Jackson and wide receiver James Quick to link up and try to exploit the secondary.
Last year when these two teams matched up Louisville came out on top 38-19, but both teams are very different from last year. Louisville has four starters returning from last year on both defense and offense. Their record also does indicate what type of team they are as they have played the third toughest schedule in the country. The Eagles need to put points on the board Saturday to win. They have scored just 34 points against FBS competition this year and will look to turn that around. There defense also needs to bounce back from allowing 34 points last week. This should be an interesting matchup against two solid ACC teams that have nothing to lose.
