Boston College (7-7) came out of the gates with no fear of the reigning national champions, but Duke (12-2) proved to be too much, winning by a score of 81- 64.
“We have three really good scorers for us in Brandon [Ingram], Grayson [Allen], and Luke [Kennard] and for us to have a chance of winning they have to put up good numbers.” says Coach Mike Krzyzewski, in his post game press conference, who is now in his 35th year at Duke. Well all three of those players put up good numbers today.
Luke Kennard scored 17 points for the Blue Devils today off the bench. The Freshmen has established himself to be a very good shooter/6th man as his shooting off the bench adds a spark to the offense. Kennard has made a big impact off the bench in a few games this year, scoring 22 against Utah State, 24 against Utah and 18 against Elon. Kennard is averaging 11 points per game and will be a key player as Duke moves forward.
Grayson Allen, who is currently leading the Blue Devils in scoring, (20.8 ppg) scored 17 points plus nine rebounds and seven assists. Coach Krzyzewski talked about Allen after the game and said, “He’s such a unique, good player.”
The sophomore went up for a dunk in the first half of the game and dunked the ball so hard, it hit off his shoulder and went into the stands, Allen then landed hard and it looked as if he was hurt, luckily he was ok. When Coach K was asked after the game if he ever asks the Sophomore to turn it down a notch and he said, “I think you have a greater chance of getting hurt when you tamper with your natural instincts.” He later said, “Allen is one of those players like Dwayne Wade [NBA All-Star] who is always on the ground and playing hard.”
“[Brandon] Ingram is a tough, tough matchup for us because of his length and skill,” said second year Head Coach Jim Christian, and he proved this to be true this afternoon. Ingram, the 6-foot-9 Freshmen forward, scored 25 points and had 9 rebounds today as he helped his team improve to 1-0 in the ACC. Ingram is projected to be a top five pick for the 2016 NBA draft if he does decide to declare following his season.
Duke is a team that puts up big numbers offensively week in and week out. The Blue Devils have scored 100+ points in each of their last four games. Today, Duke was held to 81 by the low-scoring scrappy Eagles.
However, the Eagles kept a potent Duke offense to their lowest point total of the young season. Boston College played good defense for about 8 minutes in the first period of play and 20 minutes of good defense in their second period. “It’s pick your poison with this Duke team, they drive the ball a lot and when they dont they can shoot,” said Coach Christian.
Eli Carter led Boston College in scoring yet again with 19 points. Carter continues to be this teams main and only real scorer. Playing against a team like Duke, you need other key players to step up to have a chance of winning games like this. The Eagles offense only has two players averaging in double digits this season (Carter, Robinson).
Coach Christian was disappointed in his teams offensive performance today. He said, “Your not going to beat this team if you miss shots that you make every day.”
Coach Christian was asked if he thought his Freshmen played well in their first ACC matchup and he said “ Well it was tough, we had a A.J [Turner] and a lot of different guys playing different roles because of foul trouble, but I thought they competed.”
Christian’s Freshmen did compete today. Guard, Jerome Robinson scored 17 points on the afternoon and although he is the only player who made an impact statistically, all the Freshmen worked hard. “I think there a better team than they were last year” said Coach K “This team is a together team.”
Boston College looks to get their first ACC win of the year on Thursday when they take on Notre Dame (9-4), who lost to Virginia in their first ACC matchup of the season today. Both teams will be looking for their first conference win.
Duke will travel to take on Wake Forrest on Wednesday in what should be a very good conference matchup.
