Boston College- behind the gritty play of quarterback Paul Peterson who earned MVP honors in the the final version of the bowl in its Tire incarnation- defeated the Tar Heels by a score of 37-24. BC fans might not remember much else about the game, but one of the most memorable plays of the season occurred in the fourth quarter.
Peterson injured himself on a third-down play with about ten minutes to go in the game. He was wheeled off the field with a broken leg; on the next play from scrimmage, the Eagles faked a field goal and kicker Ryan Ohliger ran 21 yards for a touchdown. Peterson could be seen clapping and cheering on the sideline as he was being carted away.
Fast-forward to 2005, and BC's match-up with UNC is just as important if not moreso. While last year's victory served as notice to the ACC that the Eagles were for real (the Tar-Heels defeated Miami in 2004), Tom O'Brien's squad has a chance to go 6-2 in their first season as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. To do that, they must win their final three games, and as Tim Bulman used to say, "You need to get one to get to three." After an uninspired loss to Virginia Tech 11 days ago, the Eagles will once again turn to senior quarterback Quinton Porter to get the job done.
Porter has not shown much his past two starts, as he has gone a combined 33-65 with three touchdowns and four interceptions. Two of those interceptions have been returned the other way for scores. If Porter struggles or appears to be favoring his ankle, O'Brien may go to sophomore Matt Ryan.
