CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Bill McGovern has been promoted to Defensive Coordinator for the Boston College football team, Head Coach Frank Spaziani announced today. McGovern has been the Eagles' linebackers coach for the past nine seasons.

"Bill McGovern has truly earned this opportunity through his hard work and loyalty to the Boston College football program," Spaziani said. "Our players respect Coach McGovern, and so do I. He is unquestionably the right person for this job."

"It's a dream come true to become the defensive coordinator at Boston College," McGovern said. "I have enjoyed working with Coach Spaz tremendously over the course of the past nine seasons. My family and I are thrilled to remain a part of this program, and I am extremely excited about the challenge."

McGovern fills the vacancy left by Spaziani after he was promoted to head coach on January 13.

McGovern helped lead one of the most prolific defenses in the nation last season. The Eagles ranked in the top 10 in the nation in seven defensive categories, including interceptions (first, 26); turnovers gained (second, 36); total defense (fifth, 268.14 ypg.); red zone defense (sixth, 72%); first downs allowed (sixth, 14.71 pg.); rushing defense (seventh, 91.2 ypg.), and pass efficiency defense (seventh, 98.81).

McGovern has mentored many outstanding linebackers during his tenure at BC, most recently ACC Defensive Player of the Year Mark Herzlich, who emerged as one of the top linebackers in the country last season and was a finalist for the Butkus Award. Herzlich and Brian Toal were both freshman All-America selections under McGovern's tutelage while Toal was the 2004 Big East Rookie of the Year.

A native of Oradell, N.J., McGovern was a four-year starter at defensive back for Holy Cross before his graduation in 1985.
