Women's Hoops Notes

With four games left in the season, it is crunch time for the Eagles. They are two games short of twenty wins and looking for a bid in the NCAA tournament. So every game is big. According to ESPN, the Eagles are currently a 10th seed in the tournament. A strong finish could boost that seeding and maybe have them playing closer to home.

Miami Recap

Boston College women's basketball sits just outside the top 25, following their 71-64 win over the University of Miami on Monday. The Eagles are 18-7 overall and 6-4 in the ACC with just four games left of the regular season.

BC dominated the boards in the victory over the Hurricanes. Twenty-nine of their 48 rebounds came while on defense. Sophomore center Carolyn Swords led the Eagles with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks, her ninth double-double of the season. Sophomore forward Stefanie Murphy recorded her fourth double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Thirteen of BC's nineteen bench points came from senior guard Corey Rusin along with six rebounds 4 assists and 2 steals. Junior guard Ayla Brown also had a good game with 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals.

In the last game against Miami, the Hurricanes took away the inside players, giving junior guard Mickel Picco opportunities. According to head coach Sylvia Crawley, "In this game they focused more on Mickel Picco and just took their chances with our inside players and they were able to dominate inside."

The teams went into the locker rooms tied at 32. The Eagles broke the tie, just 18 seconds into the half with a three-pointer from Brown. BC would not relinquish that lead for the rest of the game.

With 2:17 left in the game, the Eagles saw their largest lead of the game. Rusin sank two free throws to put BC nine points ahead, 67-58. The Eagles would see that margin again with 16 seconds left courtesy of two free-throws by Picco. The Hurricanes managed to hit a jumper to narrow the final margin to seven….

The Eagles have four more games this season. They face the University of North Carolina at home on Thursday. BC has away games against the University of Virginia and Maryland University before their final home game against North Carolina State University.

This week is a big one for BC. They broke the three-game losing streak by beating Miami on Monday. Thursday, they face UNC in Crawley's first game against her former head coach. Then on Sunday they travel down to UVA.

Carolina and Virginia will be big games for the Eagles, they currently sit just above and below, respectively, in conference standings. "It's going to be a good game. If you look at the stats we're neck and neck in a lot of different categories, they're fourth we're fifth. It's an important game and it's just going to come down to which team comes out and plays hard for forty minutes," said Crawley about the game against the Tar Heels.

North Carolina is currently 22-4 overall and 7-3 in the ACC. A win over the Tar Heels, would put them and the Eagles in a tie for third in the conference. Virginia sits at sixth in the ACC with a 19-7 record overall and a 5-5 conference record. UVA is a strong shooting team with a scoring margin of +9.0…

The Eagles may have just lost to Maryland, but they have to travel to College Park to see them again next week. BC was able to play the Terrapins close, losing 85-81 and had big contributions from Rusin and sophomore guard Jaclyn Thoman, who both had career performances. The Eagles were leading with 35.3 seconds left, but Maryland closed out with six free throws.

The re-match will look pretty similar as both teams played well in the first game. BC had four players score double digits and Maryland had five. Look for the Eagles to come out strong, looking for revenge for the close loss…

BC's first game against NC State took place just a few days after the death of the Wolf Pack's head coach Kay Yow. Picco and Swords had strong performances, but no one else on the team scored above six points. The Eagles will need stronger contributions from more players to defeat NC State a second time. The Wolf Pack was strong on rebounds last time, so BC will have to be on top of its game in that category…
