CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College football coach Frank Spaziani has named Mike Dawson special teams assistant coach, thus completing his staff.
Dawson, who has 11 years of coaching experience, has spent the past three seasons (2006-08) as linebackers coach at the University of Akron. Prior to his stint with the Zips, Dawson was an assistant at University of New Hampshire for six seasons (2000-05), spending his final two years as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. UNH led the nation in takeaways (45) during his final season with the program. In his first four years at New Hampshire, Dawson was the linebackers coach for three seasons (2000, 02-03), while also coaching the offensive line for a year (2000).
Dawson began his career as a defensive line coach at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell in the spring of 1998. He moved on to the University of Maine for one season, gaining coaching experience as a defensive assistant. Dawson returned to his alma mater, UMass-Amherst, in the spring of 1999 before spending the season as an offensive graduate assistant at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dawson was a three-year starter at linebacker and defensive end with UMass-Amherst. After serving as team caption his senior year, he graduated in 1997 with a degree in sports management.
Dawson's appointment completes the staff for Spaziani, BC's first-year head coach. Previously, Spaziani had promoted Bill McGovern to defensive coordinator and named Gary Tranquill offensive coordinator. He named Dave Brock tight ends coach and Sean Devine offensive line coach.
Four assistants who have been with the program for the past two seasons – defensive line coach Jeff Comissiong, wide receivers coach Ryan Day, running backs coach Ben Sirmans and defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator Mike Siravo – will return as members of Spaziani's staff.
