BC In The Mix For Barker

Blake Barker in one of the top prospects in Massachusetts and has schools from around the country extending offers. He has thirteen offers from BCS schools and all of the top academic schools in the country have shown interest. Eagle Insider caught up with Blake for an update on his recruiting.

Massachusetts produces a handful of top prospects every year and the 2010 class is no exception. Blake Barker, a TE/DE prospect from BB&N, has risen to the top of the list for this recruiting class.

Barker has been on the radar of top schools since his sophomore year and has received 13 scholarship offers since schools were able to make written offers. Florida, Stanford, UNC, Duke, Penn State and Tennessee have jumped in early. Of course, Boston College has been very active in recruiting Barker.

"My involvement with BC has gone way up lately because tight ends coach has been recruiting me. They have been keeping in regular contact with me. I went to a couple of their spring practices last week. That went well. I talked to all the coaches."

At this point, Barker does not have a list of favorites, but he has settled on what he is looking for in a college.

"Basically in trying to find colleges for myself I'm looking at great academics and football. So I put together a list of colleges that fit that mold. BC is definitely on that list. Once I have that list complete, location will be the next factor in my decision."

Beyond academics, football and location, other factors will comes into play.

"I then will look at the schools as far as comfort level. I will be there for four years and want to make sure I will be comfortable and enjoy it. BC is definitely on the list and they are high on my list. They have everything."

Many prospects talk about academics, but Barker has a somewhat different take on the issue.

"I'm not thinking too much about a major. I'm more interested in how much importance the coaches put into the academic side of things. I want to know how serious they are about players going to school and getting their class work done. The academic reputation of the school is also important. The degree means a lot to me."

Like most prospects, spring and summer is the time to see colleges and begin to narrow down choices. Barker has been busy visiting colleges and is now making plans for the summer.

"I just got off of spring break. We had two weeks off and this is my first week back. I'm looking into the weekend camps right now. I'm talking it over with my coach and then plan out my summer. I'm looking at camps at the schools this summer.

"I have not traveled too much. I've been to Florida with my family a lot. I've also been out to California to visit Stanford. I've also been down to Duke to see a game. I saw the Duke-UNC game. I got to see UNC too. I also went down to visit Florida a couple of weeks ago. Of course, I've been to Stanford, too."

As far as football, colleges have varying opinions as to where Barker fits in at the next level.

"A lot of colleges like me on both sides of the ball. Some coaches like me as a defensive end and others as a tight end. Virginia actually thinks I'm a linebacker for them. I'm flexible about that. Wherever the coaches think I fit is fine by me."

Barker is being recruited by coach Comissiong and coach Brock for Boston College.
