August Decision For Shane Johnson

Maryland offensive lineman Shane Johnson has been busy this spring and summer. He has visited all but one of the schools that offered him and he now beginning the process of narrowing down his options. With just one visit left, he expects to narrow things down and make a decision this August.

Shane Johnson is an example of the academics first athlete. His list of school choices includes some of the most prestigious academic schools playing big-time football. He currently holds offers from Boston College, Maryland, Stanford, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Carolina and Wake Forest.

This spring and summer he has been busy visiting the colleges recruiting him and getting to know the respective coaching staffs. Now, the process of narrowing things down and getting to a decision has started.

"I have not narrowed down my list yet, but I'm talking to my parents about it. Beyond the schools that have offered me, I'm not looking at anyone else right now. "

One of the schools Shane visited this summer was Boston College.

"The BC camp worked out really well. That camp was good. They helped me out with my kick slide. When I was there I did not get to see more than just the dorms and the practice field, which was at the stadium. I did not expect the stadium to be that nice. It was much bigger than I expected."

In addition to Boston College, Shane camped at Pittsburgh and Rutgers.

"Pittsburgh was very nice. The facility is great. The Steelers are right there and that's really nice. I went to Rutgers for their big man camp. I got a chance to walk around there a bit. I liked it, it was nice."

Two schools outside the Northeast remain on the list.

"I did not get down to Wake this summer, but there are still high on my list. I like them a lot. Coach Grobe is a great coach. I went out to Stanford and it was a beautiful campus. It was really big and different than other places. For them, I'll have to take some honors classes this season. I'm not sure if I going to do that or not, but that's what they told me."

With the season approaching, the pressure is on to make a decision. Shane expects to narrow things down over the next few weeks and then decide in August.

"I'm visiting Pitt one more time in August then I'm going to make my decision. I hit it off there with them and want to check them out one more time. It is hard right now because everyone is asking where I will go to college. But, I'd rather it be this way than the opposite. "
