Butler typically offers athletes after June 15th before their junior year. However, it looks like the Bulldogs may be taking a new approach.
While hosting numerous prospects for their Elite Camp on Saturday, Butler extended an offer to a rising 6-foot 10 center, Derrik Smits.
Smits, Zionsville (IN) High School, has been expanding his game and growing as the summer moves along.
Butler had seen enough and as of June 2nd, Smits had his offer from Coach Brad Stevens.
Earlier in April, Smits told us that he had followed a few teams growing up.
"I followed IU, Butler, and Texas growing up," Smits said. "My family used to go to Texas every year, so I fell in love with the state."
With the early offer, which is the first for Smits and the first confirmed offer for a player in the Class of 2015, Butler may have moved out front for the talented junior-to-be.
Follow InsideTheDawgPound as we catch up with Derrik to get his reaction to the offer and how this affects his recruitment.
