Butler Falters Late At Xavier

Butler (10-4) fell for the second time in the Big East, this time to Xavier (12-3) 79-68.

Cincinnati (OH) - Butler (10-4) fell for the second time in the Big East, this time to Xavier (11-3) 79-68.

Butler shot 23/52 (44.2%) from the field including 6/17 (35.3%) from the three point line, but the Bulldogs came up short down the stretch and shot just 31% in the 2nd half.

Khyle Marshall led Butler with 14 points on 6/14 shooting from the field, while Kellen Dunham had 11 points, but struggled in the 2nd half. Dunham shot just 3/10 from the field.

Semaj Christon led the Musketeers with 20 points on 7/14 shooting from the field. He also had 8 assists.

Three others finished in double figures for Xavier. Transfer Matt Stainbrook had 17 points (7/12 FGs), Justin Martin finished with 13 points, and Dee Davis had 12 (2/3 3PT).

Butler and Xavier traded blows in the 1st half. The Bulldogs and Musketeers when back and forth throughout the half exchanging leads until Butler grabbed the lead during a 12-5 run to end the half.

The Bulldogs lead 42-37 at the break.

In the 2nd half Xavier started strong. The Musketeers quickly tied the game and eventually grabbed the lead. Xavier led 58-52 with 11:26 left in the game.

Butler responded to tie the game just a minute later and again the teams went back and forth.

Xavier led 71-68 with 2:27 left in the game and Butler wouldn't score again. The Musketeers finished the game on an 8-0 run and put the Bulldogs away.

Kameron Woodswas active once again for Butler. The junior forward had 8 points and 7 rebounds.

It was Xavier's efficiency from the field that eventually put Butler in the rear view mirror. The Musketeers shot 28/55 (50.9%) from the field including 3/9 (33.3%) from three. They were also 20/24 (83.3%) from the free throw line.

NOTES:Xavier had just 2 points off the bench, while Butler scored 21 behind 10 points from Elijah Brown, 9 points from Andrew Chrabascz, and 2 points from Rene Castro...Xavier won the turnover battle 8 to 15...Butler was just 16/24 from the free throw line...Xavier also won the points in the paint battle 36-24...Attendance was 10,250.

The game was over when...Myles Davies connect on two free throws after Butler fouled off of a three point miss by Elijah Brown with 29 seconds left. The lead was extended to 75-68.

Stat of the Game: 9/29 - Butler's field goal shooting in the 2nd half. The Bulldogs connect on just 31% from the field including 1/6 (2 points) from Kellen Dunham.
