St. John's dominated on the glass out-rebounding Butler 35-21 and shot 30/57 (52.6%) from the field. The efficiency from the outside helped to offset the disparity at the free throw line. The Red Storm finished just 4/5 from the free throw line, while Butler shot 13/20.
Jakarr Sampson led all scorers with 20 points for St. John's while shooting 9/14 from the field. He also grabbed 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks.
Freshman Rysheed Jordan aded 16 points and 5 rebounds for the Red Storm, while leading scorer D"Angelo Harrison struggled from the field. He shot just 4/12 and finished with 12 points.
Butler was led by Khyle Marshall who finished with 16 points and 4 rebounds. He shot 7/13 from the field and just 2/4 from the free throw line.
Butler finished 19/43 (44.2%) from the field, while shooting 1/8 (12.8%) from three.
The Bulldogs led for much of the 1st half, before St. John's ended the half on a 20-7 run to take a 41-34 lead into the break.
In the 2nd half the Red Stormed continued that same run with 8 more points to take a 49-34 lead.
Butler tried to battle back late in the half and cut the lead to just 57-50, however the Bulldogs wouldn't get any closer.
