Smits Continues to Progress

2015 C Derrick Smits, Zionsville (IN) HS continues to progress on the court and interest continues to develop on the recruiting trail.

INDIANAPOLIS (IN) - After suffering an injury to his ankle earlier in the year, 2015 C Derrick Smits continues to recover from his injury and make progress on the court.

The nearly 7-foot center from Zionsville (IN) High School has had interest come in from around the country and still holds three offers from Clemson, Butler, and Xavier.

Smits listed Gonzaga, Purdue, Notre Dame, and Iowa as other schools that have been showing interest, but hasn't been offered by them yet.

Butler was the first team to offer Smits a scholarship, but communication with the staff has slowed, however Smits remains interested in the Bulldogs and has a few other teams that are turning up the heat.

"I went to their game against Xavier," Smits said. "But they didn't talk to me. Xavier, Clemson, and Gonzaga are recruiting me the hardest."

Smits has been watched by Butler, Xavier, Clemson, and Purdue recently.

Smits and Zionsville had won 10 games in a row, but have lost a few in a row recently.

"We are doing pretty good," Smits explained. "We went on a 10-game winning streak, but have lost 3 of our last 5, but have played the top two teams in the state."

While Smits has recovered from his injury, he is still trying to work on playing well each and every game. The junior says he is averaging nearly 13 points per game and that number continues to rise each game.

"It has been going up all season," Smits said. "It started out low because I wasn't healthy, with my ankle the first month or so. (I'm working on) consistency. I've put a lot more good games together this year than I did last year."

With the season wrapping up, Smits and Zionsville head to the Indiana State Tournament starting with sectionals.
