INDIANAPOLIS (IN) - Interim Butler Head Coach Chris Holtmann made two staff moves to fill out his coaching staff on Tuesday afternoon. Holtmann added graduate Emerson Kampen and Nova Southeastern assistant coach Brandon Crone to the staff.
Both Crone and Kampen are former players at Butler University. Kampen had served as a graduate assistant previously and will be promoted to full time assistant coach. He fills the position vacated by Holtmann, who had been named interim head coach during Brandon Miller's leave of absence.
“We are excited about the increased role of Emerson and the addition of Brandon to our staff,” said Holtmann in a statement released by Butler. “Emerson has been a part of some of the most accomplished teams in the history of our program and, while young, he has an impressive basketball IQ and terrific rapport with our players.”
Kampen had joined Butler's basketball team as a walk-on from Yorktown High School. He was a member of the back-to-back Championship Game appearances for Butler. The Bulldogs amassed a 110-39 record while Kampen was in uniform for the Bulldogs.
Crone joins the Bulldogs' staff after his time at Nova Southeastern. The former Butler forward will serve as the Director of Basketball Operations. He replaces former DBO T.J. Saint, who left Butler to join the Detroit Pistons as their video coordinator.
“Brandon has a great appreciation and understanding of the Butler Way and as a player here, he was tough, competitive and driven, leading his team to the most wins in program history at the time. Brandon has great experience as both a professional player and as an assistant coach at the college level, and we’re pleased to welcome him back.”
Crone played for Butler from 2003-2007. He helped lead Butler to the Sweet 16 in 2007 and a record of 29-7. The stretch power forward went on to play three season of professional basketball in Europe before joining Park Tudor (IN) High School as an assistant coach in 2010. He then served as an assistant at Nova Southeastern starting in 2011.
The moves would also keep open an easy transition for the staff if Brandon Miller returns. Kampen could move back to graduate assistant, while Crone remains as DBO.
The Bulldogs open up play at newly-renovated Hinkle Fieldhouse on November 1st against the University of Chicago.
