Brady Poppinga on Lombardi Award Watch List

Brady Poppinga, a first team All MWC selection last year, was today named as a pre-season candidate for the Lombardi Award. The coveted award is presented annually to the top defensive lineman in the country by the Rotary Club of Houston.

Poppinga led the Mountain West Conference with eight sacks as a sophomore last year. The 6-3, 240-pound All-America candidate from Evanston, Wyoming, also earned academic all-league honors in 2001 and 2002.

He was selected by the BYU coaching staff last season as the top defensive lineman, recording with 49 tackles and 14 takedowns for a combined loss of 66 yards. Poppinga forced three fumbles and had three hurries in addition to his league-leading eight sacks. His most impressive outing was a season-high three sacks in the Cougars' 34-10 win over San Diego State.

Voting to begin the selection process for the 34th annual Rotary Lombardi Award recipient begins in early October. The winner will be announced in Houston on December 10. It is the only award open to all college linemen.
