BYU Blues... what's a Cougar fan to do?

So this is what the Maytag man feels like. Nowhere to go. Nothing to do.

With the sudden ending of spring football practice coming almost immediately after the abrupt end of the men's basketball season, an overwhelming feeling of boredom has crept upon me.

August can't come soon enough. Even July will do.

That's when the college football preview magazines come out and the fall football hype begins its crescendo that will reach a peak when the Cougs kick off the season on August 28 against Georgia Tech.

Of course, there's always interest in the early signing period for the hoops team, which begins April 16. It will be interesting to see who the Cougars bring in to try and fill the cavernous void left by Travis Hansen's departure.

And the Cougar hoopsters will be taking to the road for an Australia tour in late July. But by then, football fanaticism will be in full swing and basketball will become a second thought until at least November.

It sure would be nice if there was little more to hold our BYU sports interests between early March and August.

Certainly, there are other sports going on right now, but does anyone really care? And speaking of other BYU sports, I sure wish we could trade our success in cross country, track and other trivial spectator activities, for greater accomplishments in the Big Two: Football and Basketball.

Yes, it's nice for the Cougars to win national titles in cross country and volleyball, but how about a new plan? Let's stink at those sports and become a perennial Top Ten team in football and Final Four threat in basketball.

Oh well, I guess we can't have everything. I sure hope the next few months go quickly.

But, to pass the time, I think I'll go fix my broken washing machine.
