Linebacker Uaea Masina still open

On Thursday, Brighton linebacker Uaea Masina received his first verbal offer from Utah defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake. Although excited about the offer, Masina didn't commit and is keeping his options open.

Since Total Blue Sports last spoke with Uaea Masina two days ago, he spoke with Utah defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake.

"He visited me at school to watch me workout and told me to call him," said Masina. "I called him later that day and he said, ‘How does it feel to be offered?' I said, ‘So you're offering me?' and he said, ‘Yup, you've got the offer.' It's a good feeling, you know?"

The Utah offer is a verbal one.

"I don't have the paper in hand," Masina said. "He said it's just a verbal offer right now, but I believe he said they were going to send it to me. I'm not sure when or what date."

True to what he stated before, Masina didn't commit to the first school that offered him just because they were the first. He wants to make a calculated decision based on what he feels is the best fit for him.

"I do like Utah and they have a great school, but at the same time I want to see other schools," Masina said. "I want to see what's out there. I like [Utah] a lot and want to keep in touch with them and keep visiting them obviously. I want to keep visiting other schools and then eventually sit down with my family."

BYU recruiting coordinator Joe DuPaix, meanwhile, heard about Masina's offer.

"Coach DuPaix asked, ‘So they did offer you?'" Masina said with a laugh. "I just said, ‘Yeah they did. They offered me.' He then asked me, ‘Well you didn't commit did you?' I told him, ‘No, I didn't and I want to explore my options.' He was like, ‘That's good.' We were just messaging back and forth through Facebook and it was a lot of fun."

According to Masina, the offer by Utah doesn't change how he'll handle the recruiting process.

"I'm pretty much just going to keep doing what I'm doing and then I'll focus a little more on during the season," he said. "I'll probably decide during the season or maybe a little before or after."

Masina still holds BYU as one of his top choices despite the recent events.

"Yup, I like BYU a lot and they've got a great program," Masina said. "I really like the coaching staff a lot and like BYU quite a bit."
