Tupai hoping for BYU offer

A couple of Cottonwood High School's talented prospects will be at BYU Wednesday to attend the Junior Day activities. One will be 6-foot-5-inch, 250-pound lineman recruit Elijah Tupai, who hopes his performance will earn him a Cougar scholarship offer.

Cottonwood High School offensive/defensive lineman Elijah Tupai, a member of the 2013 recruiting class, is excited for Junior Day.

"Oh yeah, I'll be there for sure," Tupai said. "I know they're having a combine activity tomorrow and then we'll go from there."

Tupai will be going down with defensive tackle teammate Niniva Kinikini, who suffered an injury at the UCLA camp.

Tupai hopes to impress the Cougar coaches.

"Yeah, I'm trying to get a scholarship to BYU," he said. "That would be nice. My mom is a big BYU fan, so it would be great to get a scholarship from there. I wouldn't mind because I grew up a fan."

Tupai has offers from Utah, Utah State and San Diego State, but doesn't have one from BYU as of yet. He was given the charge to raise his grades first prior to any offer being extended.

"I guess I was supposed to get better grades, and so I worked hard on that," Tupai said. "I did what they asked me and so I'm just going to go to the camp and hopefully I get an offer from them.

"I was at a 2.5 or 2.7 GPA area. I was able to bump it up to a 3.2, and so I was able to do that. I guess we'll see what happens tomorrow."
