Cougars make receiver's dream come true

The Cougars of BYU just extended a full-ride scholarship offer to a wide receiver who is considered one of fastest – if not the fastest – in the state of Utah. For this young man, it was a dream come true.

Bingham High School wide receiver Hayden Weichers received a scholarship offer from Utah State on Friday, his first offer overall.

On Saturday, Weichers met with BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall. As it turned out, Weichers didn't have to wait long for his second offer.

"I just got offered by BYU," said an excited Weichers. "I just met with Coach Mendenhall with my family and he gave me a full-ride offer to go to BYU."

A number of people were on hand for the special event.

"It was me, my mom, my dad and my three best friends and my sister," Weichers said. "We walked into Coach Mendenhall's office and sat down. He had me read some things from President Hinckley. When I finished he got up and handed me something and said, ‘I have something here you need to read.' I read it out loud paragraph by paragraph and it said I had a full-ride scholarship offer after my mission."

Receiving the offer was a huge honor for Weichers.

"It's a dream come true," said Weichers. "I'm smiling big-time right now! It's real big! My family loves it and deep down inside they're trying to hide it, but it's where they've always wanted me to go. I told Coach Mendenhall that I wanted to go home and just pray about it first to see if this is where I'm supposed to go. I didn't commit in his office, but after I say that prayer, you never know. I'm just in a daze right now and it really is a dream come true.

"This really is a dream come true for me. This has been a dream for me ever since I was two years old running out of the tunnel. I told my dad once, ‘That's going to be me someday dad! I'm going to run out of the BYU tunnel someday and make you proud!'"
