Fall camp: day 7

On Thursday the Cougars held their first full-length scrimmage of the fall in front of BYU fans at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Wearing full pads for the first time, some of the more experienced Cougars saw little or no action. Meanwhile, three touchdown drives left the offense feeling pretty good.

Scrimmage

Drive 1: Riley Nelson

Nelson , who completed 7-of-10 passes on the day for 76 yards, started off with a 6-yard completion to Dylan Collie and an 8-yard completion to Michael Alisa. Cody Raymond was able to extend the drive thanks to a nice 16-yard sliding catch downfield, one of his three catches for 31 yards. Jordan Smith added a 15-yard catch of his own, and J.D. Falslev capped off the drive with a 13-yard touchdown reception.

Michael Alisa had one carry for 6 yards and one reception for 8 yards on the drive, and didn't see much action afterwards.

Remington Peck recorded one of two sacks on the drive. On the other, it appeared that both Zac Stout and Simote Vea were in the area.

Drive 2: James Lark

Lark went 8-of-12 for 66 yards on the day. On his first drive, he completed a 12-yard pass to Kurt Henderson and another pass of only about a couple yards to Adam Hine. The drive ultimately ended with a punt.

Drive 3: Riley Nelson

Riley completed a 16-yard pass to Austin Holt, and nearly completed a deep pass to Collie, although the pass slipped through the true freshman's fingertips. Kevan Bills killed the drive with a sack.

Drive 4: Jason Munns

Munns went 3-for-5 for 28 yards during the scrimmage. In the third drive of the scrimmage, he completed an 8-yard pass to Stehly Reden, a 10-yard pass to Zed Mendenhall, and a 10-yard to Brett Thompson. Meanwhile, it looked as if he would complete a pass to a sliding Richard Wilson in the end zone, but Wilson couldn't hold on, and so the offense settled for a 33-yard field goal.

Jamaal Williams had an impressive outside run of about 14 yards earlier in the drive. After the play, the true freshman was real fired up and excited. He finished the day with an impressive five carries for 34 yards. Adam Hine also showed well on the drive, and finished the day with five carries for 29 yards.

Drive 5: Riley Nelson

Nelson's third drive resulted in a three-and-out. David Foote accounted for the lone yardage gained on the drive with a run of about 5 yards. Like his fellow running backs, he had an impressive outing, and finished with six carries for 34 yards.

Drive 6: Taysom Hill

Hill, who went 4-of-8 for 86 yards on the day, started off with a few short completions, including a 6-yard pass to Alex Kuresa. On third down, Hill nearly made a great play when he rolled out to his right and threw back across the middle of the field to a receiver in a tight window, but his intended target couldn't come down with the ball.

Drive 7: James Lark

Lark completed a pass of about 15 yard to Foote, and another of 7 yards to Wilson. Iona Pritchard had a couple nice runs on the drive, finishing with three for 16 yards on the day. Williams caught a pass for about 7 yards.

Meanwhile, Micah Hannemann had a nice pass breakup on a fade pass to Jordan Smith in the end zone. Still, the offense would not be denied. A few penalties had the offense moving backward, but Raymond had two catches and Collie had a 15-yard catch to extend the drive, which was capped off with a 5-yard touchdown run from Williams.

Drive 8: Ammon Olsen

Olsen got the fewest reps on Thursday, finishing just 1-of-1 for 11 yards. His completion went to Hine. Teu Kautai had a sack on the drive, which was also hurt by a false start penalty. Olsen couldn't find anyone open on third-and-long, and ended up having to take off and run, but was stopped well short of the marker.

Drive 9: Taysom Hill

There were a few issues on Hill's second drive, which started off with a fumbled snap and later saw Hill fumble the ball while dropping back. Though he was able to recover the ball and roll out to his left on the latter play, the defense was credited with a sack.

But, ultimately the offense had the last laugh. Hill completed a 29-yard pass to Terenn Houk and a 16-yard pass to Thompson. Then, Houk put his stamp on the drive with a nice 37-yard catch in the end zone.

Drive 10: Jason Munns

Paul Lasike got his lone carry of the day, which went for 5 yards. Munns then looked as though he was going to complete a deep pass to Thompson, but Adam Hogan was able to break up the play. Kautaui jumped a pass on third down and batted it to the ground, ending the drive.
