Fall camp: day 8

One day after holding a long full-contact scrimmage at LaVell Edwards Stadium, the Cougars returned to the practice field on Friday for their morning practice. Going in shells, the team focused on execution in the blue zone during scrimmaging.

With Thursday's full-length scrimmage totaling 83 plays, the team went a bit easier during Friday's first practice session. With the players wearing shells, there was naturally no tackling. There were also no whistles or much use of the chains, so calculating stats – especially on running plays and passing plays with yards after the catch – isn't an exact science.

This time around, the Cougars focused on executing in the blue zone. The end-of-practice scrimmage took place entirely within the 20-yard line.

Drive 1: Riley Nelson

After a productive day on Thursday, the offense picked up right where it left off on Friday. On the first play of the scrimmage, Nelson found a wide open Cody Hoffman in the middle of the end zone for a touchdown. Of all people to leave open, Hoffman probably isn't the right choice.

Despite the touchdown, Nelson stayed in and continued the drive as if there were no score. He completed a 10-yard pass to Kaneakua Friel and another pass to Richard Wilson, but did not get back in the end zone.

Drive 2: James Lark

Lark completed one pass on the drive, which went to Brett Thompson for 8 yards. Jamaal Williams and Adam Hine each got a carry on the drive, which ended with a Lark incompletion. Lark finished the day with 1-of-3 passing.

Drive 3: Riley Nelson

In his second drive, Nelson started out with completions to Iona Pritchard and Dylan Collie. He then hit Mitch Mathews in the open field, who got the corner against his defender for a 10-yard score. Once again, the touchdown didn't end the set. After a Nelson run, Preston Hadley laid out in the end zone to break up a would-be touchdown pass to Collie.

Drive 4: Taysom Hill

In his lone drive, Hill completed passes to Williams and Wilson. Hill finished 2-of-3 for 12 yards and no touchdowns.

Drive 5: Riley Nelson

Nelson was intercepted by Craig Bills in the end zone on the first play of the fifth drive. Just as touchdowns didn't end his sets, neither did the turnover, and Nelson got back to work. After Michael Alisa and David Foote got in on the action with a rush each, Nelson ended the scrimmage much like he started it, with a touchdown pass to an inexplicably wide open Hoffman, this time in the back of the end zone.

Nelson went 7-of-9 on the day for 65 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
