Thursday's scrimmage wasn't simply offense versus defense. Instead, the format was similar to that of a traditional spring game, with two teams being formed with a combination of offensive and defensive players. Coaches were also split up. The players on the sidelines were fired up throughout.
The scrimmage began before media members were admitted to the stadium, so a drive-by-drive breakdown won't be provided.
Riley Nelson began the day with a touchdown drive of 75 yards. The drive was capped off with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Cody Hoffman. Hoffman also had an 11-yard catch.
Nelson wasn't done, however, and led two more touchdown drives. Both of them were capped off with a short David Foote touchdown run near the goal line. Foote had six carries for 19 yards, and also had a 17-yard reception.
Nelson's final touchdown drive featured a pass of about 30 yards to J.D. Falslev – who turned on the jets and got a lot of his yards after the catch – and then a 26-yard pass to Brett Thompson. Falslev finished the day with two catches for 56 yards, and also had a 10-yard rush.
James Lark went 6-of-8 on the day for 60 yards and one touchdown. The score was a 15-yard toss to Kurt Henderson.
That touchdown pass was set up by a 50-yard run by Adam Hine. Hine found a hole up the gut and burst past the defense straight down the middle of the field. He was eventually caught, but not until after the big gain. Hine finished with 13 carries for 117 yards. He also scored from about four yards out on a play in which he bounced to the outside and outran his defender to the corner pylon. However, Hine also lost a fumble that was forced by Blake Morgan.
As for other running backs, Iona Pritchard had two carries for 10 yards, and Paul Lasike had two carries for 23 yards and three catches for 16 yards. Jamal Williams did not scrimmage because of a sore ankle.
Taysom Hill did not complete his lone pass attempt. Jason Munns went 2-of-4 for 10 yards. At the end of the scrimmage, Munns scrambled on fourth down to keep the drive alive but was caught by Matt Hadley for the sack. On the day, Spencer Hadley and Remington Peck combined for a sack, while Teu Kautai and Jherremya Leuta-Douyere each recorded a sack.
The following are the remaining receiving statistics: Kaneakua Friel one catch for 8 yards, Skyler Ridley one for 15, Stehly two for 18, Marcus Mathews one for 19, Alex Kuresa one for 7 (also had a few carries for about 6 yards), and Cody Raymond one for 4.
