Arizona lineman commits to BYU

As he had hoped for prior to his visit to BYU, offensive lineman Josh Carter was offered a full-ride scholarship by Coach Mendenhall. It was a hope so strong that it gave him pre-visit butterflies. On Saturday Carter got his offer and he quickly snatched it up.

Having grown up an Arizona Wildcat fan most of his life, Josh Carter turned from Arizona blue to BYU blue on Saturday.

"I did commit today with Coach Mendenhall," said Carter in a text message. "I'm going to be a Cougar!"

Carter, a 6-foot-5-inch, 280-pound offensive lineman from Eastern Arizona College, served his mission in Salt Lake City prior to playing one year of junior college football. It was while he was serving in Salt Lake that a fondness for BYU began to fill his heart. When Wildcat offensive line coach and run-game coordinator Robert Anae came back to BYU to be the offensive coordinator again, Carter saw that as Providence.

"I grew up in Tuscon and followed the Arizona Wildcats until I served my mission in Salt Lake City," Carter told Total Blue Sports in a previous interview. "Coach Anae was a great coach out at Arizona and when I heard that he was going back to BYU, I just saw that as a sign. That's when I kind of took an interest in getting in touch with the coaches at BYU."

After going to Eastern Arizona following his mission, Carter wanted to preserve the spiritual growth he had attained. He looked at BYU as a way he could preserve that spiritual growth.

"I feel peaceful," Carter said via text message. "I made the right decision and I know it. I said before the biggest thing for me was my spiritual safety, and I know that has been taken care of. Now [what] I just have to worry about is being a representative of truth, honor, and virtue."

Prior to receiving his offer, Carter was one of three recruits visiting BYU this weekend without an official offer in hand.

Once Carter returns home, a full report of his experiences this weekend will be given.

"Go Cougars!" Carter summed up.
