"I've actually been talking to BYU earlier this week and have kind of been holding off because I wanted to make sure that I could talk to [Kansas] first so they could know before I said anything," said Chambers. "I was kind of playing phone tag with them all week."
Chambers was able to finally catch up with the coaches at Kansas and let them know of his decision to be a BYU Cougar.
"Yeah, actually my football team today had a football tournament up at KU, and so I was able to tag along with them and was able to talk to them in person today," Chambers said. "They were pretty bummed and it's a tough conversation to have with anybody. To tell anyone no is a tough conversation to have."
After informing the Kansas coaches of his decision, he called up Coach Tujague to inform him that he wanted to become a BYU Cougar.
"[Tujague] said that he was very excited and that he still needed me to come out to camp this summer and he still wanted to work with me," said Chambers. "He said he wanted to get his hands on me. I told him kind of how I was feeling and about the recruiting process and that I kind of made up my mind. He was excited and said it was a great decision."
Chambers said he felt a sense of relief after committing to BYU. In fact, even his high school coach at Shawnee Mission West noticed a difference in his step.
"I saw my head coach and he said, ‘I thought there was something different about you today. You just look totally different after having that decision off your shoulders.' It is a relief off my back."
BYU has extended 24 scholarships for the 2014 class, but most of those that have committed have to go on a mission first before enrolling. Chambers has plans to do just that.
"Right now my plans are to serve a mission right out of high school," he said. "That's my plan. I want to serve first, then play football afterwards."
In order to celebrate his commitment, Chambers is planning to go out and have some fun with his friends.
"I just got done mowing a bunch of lawns, so I'm going to relax for a little bit right now," said Chambers. "I think tonight I'm going to go cosmic bowling with some friends later to celebrate just a little bit. I'm excited about it."
