Members of the media did not get to watch the entire practice on Monday, but did get to watch the final scrimmage in addition to various drills.
Starting quarterback Taysom Hill got two drives with the ones during the final scrimmage, and both drives stalled under similar circumstances. Following a quarterback run for no gain and a loss of yardage on the second play, Hill completed a pass for 10 yards or so to Skyler Ridley on third-and-long. Unfortunately, Ridley was just shy of the first-down marker.
Hill's second drive started with a sack and a quarterback keeper for no gain. On third-and-long he once again completed a pass to Ridley just shy of the first-down marker.
Ammon Olsen fared better on Monday while playing with the twos. He started off his first drive by hitting Ross Apo for about 15 yards, and after two incompletions, then hit Stehly Reden for a gain of about 17 yards. A 12-yard rush by Paul Lasike and a catch of about 10 yards or so by Terenn Houk set the Cougars up several yards shy of the goal line, and Lasike then capped off the drive by rushing for a touchdown.
Olsen's second drive was also a success. He connected with running back Nate Carter for a gain of about 10 yards, and after a sack by Marques Johnson, Carter gained another 10 yards, but on the ground this time. Next, Adam Hine caught a pass for about six yards, following which came the play of the day when Apo made a diving catch in the end zone for a 40-yard score to end the scrimmage. This prompted the entire offense – not just those on the field for that series – to run to the end zone and celebrate with Apo.
After not getting any series in last Saturday, quarterback Jason Munns also led a drive earlier during Monday's scrimmage. He completed passes to Carter and Bryan Sampson for a combined 15 yards or so before the drive stalled following an incompletion and a Carter rush for no gain.
