Fall camp report: 8/7/13

On a nice cool afternoon on Wednesday, the Cougars wore shoulder pads during practice. During the end-of-practice scrimmage, the offense definitely had the upper hand against the defense, thanks to a potent passing attack.

Things were clicking for the offense on Wednesday, as three of its four drives during the final scrimmage of the day resulted in touchdowns.

The tone was set on the first play of the scrimmage, when Taysom Hill completed a 45-yard pass to Eric Thornton. Three plays later, Hill hit Skyler Ridley for eight yards. Dallin Leavitt then made a great play, ripping the ball out of the hands of a receiver down by the goal line when it appeared he was going to possibly have a touchdown. However, Leavitt's play ended up being for naught, as Hill connected with Ross Apo in the end zone on the very next play. Apo used his superior height to go up and get the ball over his defender for the 14-yard score.

Next up at quarterback was Ammon Olsen, and he picked up where Hill left off. After completing a short pass to Mitch Mathews, he then hit Mathews again for a gain of 43 yards downfield. Three plays later, Olsen then hit Kurt Henderson for a 25-yard touchdown.

Jason Munns got one series with the third-team offense, and it was the lone drive that didn't end with a touchdown. After completing short passes to Devin Mahina and Algernon Brown, Munns then overthrew a wide open Mahina downfield. The drive ended two plays later following a sack by Austin Holt.

Hill got one more drive to end the day. Jamaal Williams started things off with two consecutive rushes for first downs. After Hill connected with Terenn Houk for a short gain a few plays later, Mathews then burned the defense again with a 42-yard touchdown reception.

During the period in which the media was allowed to watch practice, Hill completed 5 of 8 passes, while Olsen completed 3 of 4 and Munns completed 2 of 3.
