The first offensive drive started off with an Adam Hine run for several yards, and then an offensive penalty on the next play. Paul Lasike caught a pass from Taysom Hill for 7 yards, following which it was the defense's turn to commit a penalty. One of the defensive players being substituted out didn't get off the field in time, giving the offense a first down and leading Coach Mendenhall to chew the player out.
After another short Hine run, Michael Alisa then got his first scrimmage reps after being limited during fall camp and had a carry for several yards. Skyler Ridley had an 8-yard catch, and after some short runs and a short Hine reception, Alisa had a carry for 7 yards. Two plays later the drive stalled thanks to a penalty.
Nate Carter had two consecutive carries, but only for a loss of five yards. On third down, Ammon Olsen's deep pass was intercepted by Robertson Daniel.
The third drive featured a couple nice runs early, with Lasike having a 16-yard rush and Hill gaining about 30 yards on a quarterback keeper that got the offense into the blue zone. Mitch Mathews caught a 5-yard pass, while two plays later Algernon Brown was open in the flat on third down but didn't see Hill's pass which could have gone for a touchdown. So, Justin Sorensen kicked a 20-yard field goal, and then got in two attempts at a 39-yard field goal, making one of them.
After a short "halftime," Hill got another drive. After two incompletions and a stuffed Lasike run, the offense faced fourth-and-long. With this portion of the scrimmage simulating the two-minute drill, the offense went for it on fourth down. That ended up working out in their favor, as Hill hit Brett Thompson for a 56-yard gain. Thompson caught the pass down by the goal line and held on despite getting hit as he fell to the ground. Two plays later, Lasike got into the end zone for the score.
Olsen led the way at quarterback for the final drive of the day. On his first pass, Craig Bills made a great break on the ball and nearly had an interception. Brown then had a carry for 4 yards and Alisa caught a pass for a first down.
The next play was the play of the day, with Algernon Brown gaining 27 yards on the ground after bouncing off would-be tacklers and absolutely laying out a defender with a punishing blow. The entire offense – including those on the sideline – got very fired up after the punishing run. That momentum carried over to the next play, with Devin Mahina catching a 20-yard touchdown pass.
Hill completed 6 of 9 passes on the day for 81 yards, and had 39 rushing yards on two carries. Olsen completed 2 of 4 passes for 27 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Hine had three carries for 6 yards, Lasike had five carries for 24 yards, Alisa had three carries for 11 yards, Carter had two carries for -5 yards, and Brown had three carries for 33 yards.
