Recruiting: Timpanogos vs. Sanpete

Three Timpanogos High School standouts recruited by BYU – Isley Filiaga, Thor Pili and Paul Kruger – played the first game of their senior season days ago against Sanpete High.

Filiaga, a defensive tackle/offensive guard, and Pili, a defensive end/tight end, have already been offered scholarships by BYU. Kruger has not been offered, presumably because of BYU's logjam at quarterback.

In what turned out to be a rain-drenched game Filiaga showed why he could be one of the best defensive linemen in Utah.

Facing a constant double team, Filiaga manhandled his way past Sanpete's offensive line, busting the middle open and creating problems for the running backs and quarterback.

Sanpete ran away from Filiaga rather than straight at him, but he still recorded two sacks and quite a tackles for losses despite a bad leg cramp midway through the game.

At left defensive end, Pili showed excellent rushing ability from the outside. Hampered by a sprained ankle, Pili still caught quite a few deep passes from quarterback Kruger over the middle and in the flats.

Kruger has the size and arm strength to be a good pocket passer. His size allows him to be able to see over the line of scrimmage and downfield. Because of his size and athleticism, Kruger could get looks at a few different positions in college like tight end and defensive end.

Utah has offered Kruger a scholarship and some reports indicate he will verbally commit to play there.
