Injuries, Updates and Adjustments

BYU's athletic head football coach Gary Crowton took over as the scout team quarterback today for a spell, taking snaps and running various plays. He did not attempt any passes.

* Running back Marcus Whalen will not travel to New Mexico to play the Lobos this Saturday. Whalen did not dress for practice and Crowton said Whalen might travel if Thomas Stancil can't go. Stancil is recovering from some bone spurs in his leg, but practiced today. Whalen will most likely be cleared for the Stanford game if things go according to plan.

* BYU will also be without tight end Justin Jory. Crowton said Jory sprained his foot during practice on Tuesday. Phillip Niu and Aissac Aiono will both replace Jory in the line up.

* Wide receiver Toby Christensen has been tabbed to return punts, with cornerback Nathan Soelberg and receiver Brett Cooper handling the primary kick return responsibilities. Crowton said he wants to limit Reynaldo Brathwaite's role as a returner because he will be the starting running back. Stancil may also get a chance to return kickoffs.

* Defensive tackle Manaia Brown did not dress in pads today because of a minor aggravation to his shoulder during practice yesterday. Brown will travel to New Mexico and will play sparingly as he has against USC and Georgia Tech.

* Back up quarterback Lance Pendleton will be BYU's third-string quarterback if he is ruled eligible. Crowton believes the odds are about 50-50 that Pendleton will be eligible in time for the game. If Pendleton cannot travel as a back up quarterback and wide receiver, Crowton said he will take Jackson Brown and Breyon Jones.
